Neighbours Dog's Smell In My Garden

Ask a Question

I like my neighbours and I like animals. I just don’t have pets of my own. I like to sit in the sun in my garden but they have a dog and it does business in the garden. To be fair I have spotted they have a bin for poop bags in corner. Thing is when days are hot it is an unpleasant waft of dog doings that comes where I sit. We all have small gardens and directly next to each other. I don’t want to report and I don’t really speak to them only to say hello. Is there anything I can do to mask/lessen the smell on these hot days? Any advice?

I hope for your sake you are not a council tenant. If you are and you make a complaint they will tell you it's in confidence and then inform your neighbour who complained about them, this happened to me. I have a neighbour who has a personality disorder, according to the a lady at the council. I don't think she should have told me my neighbours health problem either. My neighbour has 2 dogs and lots of chickens but the problem isn't the smell it's that she screams and swears at my security camera and obviously me if I'm outside. On occassion she has thrown cat poo over the garden fence. I'm disabled now so I hardly go outside anyway but I would like to go in my garden as it used to be beautiful.

EmmaWright762 That sounds so awful and I’m sorry for you. We are private owners though so council are not involved. I’m just trying to find a solution that doesn’t upset anyone.

EmmaWright762 Even with the personality disorder, she can't pretend the screams, swearing, and throwing poop is all because of it, that's her own doing.

She should be reported to the police for that hostile behavior because who knows if it gets even worse and you can't really defend yourself.

Moreover, a neighbor I have abroad has been with a woman he met on Facebook and lately she's been pretty disrespectful to him and even shout at him for no reason, if it continues that way I'd hope he'd break up with her and she moves to her son's house (she sold/rented the house she was living in.. not a good idea). I remember she kept talking about marrying him, but that's the thing, she decided to sell her place (and her dad's house) so if they'd sign the papers she'd own his house (unless of course there'd be a prenup agreement).

What a mistake he made bringing that into his home.

JLouM Have you asked kindly about it? If they're reasonable people they'd understand.

And besides, dog poop should be removed as that really does leave a bad smell around.

PhilipMarc I'm pretty sure the police wouldn't do much considering she's got mental health issues and psychiatrists are far and fewn between. They did raid her house with some beautiful looking police dogs some years back but I'm pretty sure I do not want to know why.

As for your neighbours, at least there is hope they will break up. Have my fingers crossed for you. Good luck Philip 😄

PhilipMarc No I haven’t, not as yet. They are nice people and most of the time it’s not too much of a problem but on hot days it really does smell. I’m not sure if anything can be done about it though.

JLouM Pick up and throw it away, or bury it.

When I saw your title I thought you were asking what summer smells we all like, obviously no one wants to smell dog mess. I would probably need to have a polite word with them. It’s can be difficult. Do they use the garden themselves? Or just for the dogs? My only other advice would be to visit a garden centre and ask them for a strong smelling flower. Jasmine is very strong but I can’t stand the smell of it.

eyeballkerry Yes they do use the garden too. I think that’s best if I can get some strong fragrant plants and herbs where I sit. I don’t like confrontations like these really if I can avoid it. If I get it all summer when it’s hot I may have to say something.

Buy some menthol rub and put a small amount under your nostrils.

I think it’s not unreasonable to ask your neighbour to get rid of the dog mess somewhere further away on hot days due to the smell. The worst they can do really is say no

First port of call would be to have a nice chat with the neighbours. I have noticed on my walks lately around our local nature reserve that when i pass the dog poo bins they are stinking and that's without the heat on them so totally understand what you are saying, must be most unpleasant to sit in your garden on a nice day.

And that smell will only get worse when it really warms up and summer arrives, nothing worse than smelling dog/cat p*** & 💩

Makes you think what it's like in the house if if they can't be bothered to pick the mess up.

Buy them a bag of 99p dog poo rolls. And turn it on them just say the smell must drive her crazy too and she might not be aware of the little poo bags x
