Energy Prices
Ask a Question
I am Flipping annoyed at my Energy, I Received a letter from Scottish Power informing me My Energy will increase yet again 1st January 2023 it goes on to say the Government energy price cap is set to increase to £4,279 a year ( not forgetting it usually goes up again March) for a typical household, meaning the typical household will be paying £2,500 until March 2023 however mine will increase in January to £4,279 , Yet I live on my own, I pay for electricity via a Key meter which I always have ( not that I owe anything apparently they say people only use key meters if they are in Debt I would rather pay via key than find a lump sum each quarter) anyway I am on my own so I watch tv in the dark, I have nothing plugged in other than my fridge/ Freezer, I have been living on Sandwiches until I bought an air fryer a couple of weeks ago, I use my washer twice in a week once , Dry washing on clothes maid (Bedding and Towels do go in the dryer) and they have a cheek to point out I should look at ways of using less electricity they say the less you use the less you pay, seems to me the less I use the more I pay
Pfs I know , I think the Government could do far more than they are doing, Funny how they are quick to say it’s going up but never say if it will ever return to what it was before they started getting away with stealing people’s money, it’s Ridiculous that we have to go to other countries to get gas and electricity I always thought British Gas was exactly that “British “ sadly not so why continue to use the name when it’s not what it says on the tin
We got the same sort of letter from our electricity company ovo cost of electricity and gas and cost of living is getting well out of control its about time people in the new year stand up and make the government take notice and do something
It is difficult to explain but perhaps this MSE article will help www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2022/11/government-confirms-energy-bill-discount-for-january--with-bills/
The increase is to the Energy Price Cap now £4279 from Jan . The Energy Price Guarantee (what we actually pay ) remains at £2500 . Obviously that is not necessarily what you will pay (we pay for what we use ) .
The energy firms charge Energy Price guarantee rates and the government pay the difference between those and the price cap . For most people there will be no difference in rates from January .
However MSE (and others) have found a quirk in the calculations that means those on prepayment meters will see an increase of about 1% in the cost per unit after January .
To summarise your energy will rise by about 1% in January not the 70% you fear . Not great ,but not the catastrophe you fear . Hope that helps .
I too live on my own so can be flexible when I do my wash (I wait for a forecast dry and windy day and do it the night before ) . I have an airfryer (which I bought last year as it was a gadget I didn't have ) Since then I haven't used my oven . Can do everything using my microwave and airfryer .
Golfforall I know that But it shouldn’t go up by 1% when you use less than they claim a typical household uses, Why should some people pay £2,500 a Year and continue to pay that until March yet it seems the less you use the more you pay, and to top that off they have a cheek to say I should look at ways of using less Electricity pointing out the less used the less you pay for. Well seeing as I only have one hot drink a day and watch TV in the Dark how exactly can I use Less I also don’t know why those of us who use a key meter are charged more than those who pay Quarterly it shouldn’t be allowed, Lights and Heating are a Necessity not a Luxury that we can do without,
marie009 It does cost a fortune . I pay by monthly DD and always trey to keep comfortably ahead , with the aid of the £66 a month government subsidy and my normal DD I thought I'd be fine through the winter . After doing my sums I realised I will fall behind sometime in January , so I've paid a lump sum and upped my DD before they ask me . You could of course pay by monthly DD and cut your energy costs by 5% -10% , no need to pay a humping great bill quarterly . If you set that up now you would benefit from the £66 a month government subsidy auto deducted from your DD for the next 3 months .
Wholesale energy markets are stabilising but the energy companies pay for their energy 6 months or so in advance so should be cheaper from April (but never as cheap as they used to be ).
I realise it doesn't seem like it but the less you use the less you will pay (+ a standing charge 75p a day for me on dual fuel ) . As for the energy firms making a killing , if that were so why have so many of them gone bust ?
It is ridiculous, I don't know why yours is so high - that doesn't seem right to me.
My main purpose for going to work now is to pay the energy companies and the only reason to look for better paid jobs is to keep myself afloat and continue lining the pockets of the energy companies. Life feels hopeless with these costs and the predicted rises are unsustainable.
