Heating on All Day, is Yours?

Ask a Question

This morning has been particularly cold so I’ve had to have heating on constantly.

Are you managing without or just once or twice a day?

We succumbed last night too tho having checked metre this morning & seen it cost over £6 for just under 3.5 hours heating. 😤 Stuff that! We'll be sticking to layers. I refuse to pay that.

Glitterandgold you must keep warm though. We don’t have a smart meter so it would be a hassle to check.

We have oil for heating but it still takes electricity to use the boiler. As we are home all day and don't like to be cold we have had the heating on.

I don't know if anyone else uses oil but our oil bill trebbled this year (compared to the price one year ago) and hasn't come down much since then so our tank now costs £1,400 to fill instead of being under £500. The government have stated that they are going to give oil heating households £100 towards this trebbling of costs! How generous.....

Will your tank last all winter or just a couple of months?

Pjran It will last the winter but we thought the £100 compensation was a paltry amount in recompense for the extra £1,000 we are paying out on top the the increased electricity charges.

tumblespots I watched the Martin Lewis show this evening and I’m sure he mentioned oil users were going to get £200.

Pjran Thanks very much for that, I appreciate it, I shall have a look for his broadcast.

£200 would be better than £100 but it still doesn't really compensate for the enormous increase. Ultimately we all know that once utility bill prices rise, they rarely fall....

Pjran Funnily enough I have just read something on the MSE confirming the increase to £200. I do thank you for bringing it to my attention 😀 www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/cheap-heating-oil/

You’ll have to wait till you become OAPs, my friend has told me how much extra they get. Even as OAPs they’re in the higher tax bracket.

My heating is on all day but I know I won't be able to afford the Bil.l My wife and my young daughter are actually ill at the moment and have been for the last 5 days but I refuse to worry about the greedy electric and gas companies as my family comes first.

Mine is still off 🙈🙈. I do have a log burner and we are lucky enough to have a supply of wood, so I light that around lunch time and have all the doors opens throughout the house to take the chill off, also great for drying washing

Pjran I noticed that this was a year ago that you said you had the heating on all day - with all the price increases can you still afford to do that ?

As i am disabled I will stay in my fluffy pj’s and dressing gown under my duvet cos i can’t afford to put the heating on much.

suevernon1968 the thermostat has been reduced to 18. I still have the central heating on and a thermal vest.

Pjran I kept thinking my family should turn the thermostat down to 18 due to what they say in the news that you don't need it higher, but our plumber recently said to ignore it. Our heaters don't turn on at 18 and it can get so cold.

suevernon1968 My family keep it on the 'all day setting' but it doesn't actually turn on when the thermostats low - I'm not sure on the cost if the heaters don't actually turn on but it's on the all 'day setting'.

Usually for an hour a day in the evening when it gets quite cold. I'm home all day and when I'm working at my desk I have a heated blanket instead.

MelissaLee1 same here. Until yesterday hadn't had it on since Christmas day, then only because I had guests. But temps have dropped so I have set timer for 2 hours each morning.

Lynibis I don't have central heating..I hate it! I have a small electric fire which I put on for about 30 mins when it's absolutely freezing. Most times I just don a extra layer of clothing or get under the blankets. Can't beat natural warmth.

I only use it when necessary. I tend to wear thermals, layer clothing, use a hot water bottle, dehumidifier and blankets 😃

I never thought we would get to the stage that it would cost so much to warm our homes. I'm paying £100 per month in a flat, and haven't had my heating on yet. It's outrageous.

Update, a year on...

We've recently moved into an electric only property, I only turn a small heater on if I HAVE to, as I have breathing issues, I try and use blankets, slippers and an Oodie. I naturally run quite cold, my hands are always freezing.

We have reptiles and other insects that need heat, their enclosures are heated all the time though.

I do heat areas that need it more to help keep mould away.

I got a weighted blanket this week and it massively helps to keep the heat in and helps me sleep through 👌 I've been considering getting one for a few years and didn't, wish I had!

My husband checked our latest monthly bill, it was nearly £300. Plus we occasionally light our coal fire.
