Cash on the Rise
Other
Use if Cash has risen for the 2nd year in a row. One reason for this people budgeting as it's easier as you can see how much money you have.
Do you use cash still? If so what do you use it for.
I use it for honesty boxes to buy veg and eggs locally and at craft fairs for those who don't use card readers.
I use it all the time. In my opinion cash is so important. It definitely helps many people budget better and we need a way to pay for things that can't be tracked so we're not bombarded with advertising based on our data
Remember many loyalty schemes trace your movements through use of your loyalty cards or credit cards so if you want to appear invisisble to them when you aren't getting any loyalty offers don't show them your loyalty card/app bar code but do pay with cash. That way you are more likely to get a good offer in the future like a money off voucher to bring you back into buying from that store. No need to give them evidence you are shopping in their shop unless its beneficial to do so. So definitely worth carrying some cash about. Lidl plus for example. I find there are no offers each week I want to use and now if there is a free item it is often only with a £25 purchase and of minor value. I don't spend that much in Lidl more like £12 per shop as they don't have a lot of stuff I need and much of it is below acceptable quality for the things I buy like manky tiny bananas etc. So no need to show my Lidl Plus app most of the time. I would never reach their frequent use bonuses I only visit them about once every 2 months anyway. However a £5 off £25 voucher is beneficial occasionally.
BonzoBanana Paying with cash only doesn't work in Morrisons, Sainsburys, Boots, Co-Op if you have loyalty cards. I have tried paying cash with the above retailers many times and not one issued money off vouchers to non-loyalty card holders.
I didn’t used to use cash much at all but recently i have needed to get some out and it’s been a bother since a lot of the cash points i went to weren’t working and stores didn’t give cash back.
This has made me start to use cash more cause i fear the more people stop using it, the more bother it will be to get, when i need it.
I feel stupid using a card for just some milk or a loaf of bread, anything under a fiver really. So I always try to have cash on me but I sometimes run out and it's a real pain.
I use my card for larger purchases but have a notebook where I deduct every purchase from my bank balance and always know what I have. I then check online banking weekly just to make sure the totals tally.
TheChimp I don't get lots just a few bits as Xmas presents. I'd rather get one decent present then loads of tat
Jerseydrew That's exactly what they have sold in every craft fair that I've been to, tat..
Farmers markets are no better
TheChimp there's some tat at tge ines I've been too but some nice stuff. I don't go for the stuff like tropic
I use cash all the time when I'm out and about, the only time I use cards is buying online , which I'm doing less and less
martinlufc5637 wow that's interesting that you are shopping less online and more in shops. I prefer online shopping to be honest
I only use cash if I have to these days. It's really not that convenient. Carrying too much cash makes me feel more vulnerable too
I tend to use a mixture of both cash and cards, still prefer cash as find I budget myself a bit better and i'll use a credit card if making big purchases.
HEDGEHOGS We use a credit card to both get cashback and to get the extra protection it gives you when spending larger amounts.
tumblespots yes cards are great for cashback. I refuse to have a credit card cos I'd spend more then I could payback
I am not surprised that using cash is happening more. I imagine that it is very hard to budget when you swipe you card/watch anywhere and don't even get a receipt. I have always wondered how people who don't get a receipt keep track of everything . With cash, it's wither in your pocket, ready to spend, or it isn't and you have none left.
tumblespots in shops it'd hard but when I shop online it's easier as I can check my bank balance before spending and put things in my basket and come back to it later and decide if it's worth it
Jerseydrew I keep a list, on excel, of what I spend and take that amount away from what I expect the whole bill to be so that I always know how much there is left to spend.
tumblespots wow that's really sensible. I'm bad with money. I get my oh to look after our money as he is better with it then me
Jerseydrew I'm better than Mr T with money.
I also have the bank balance on an excel spreadsheet and project the balance forward so that I can plan ahead (I must get a life )
tumblespots I'm amazing with money just spending it not actually balancing it. The hubby is a scrooge so is good with money and reigns me in
I only use cash when I go to the shops. We need to keep cash in circulation. I’m glad more people are using it
PayItForward agree we need to keep it in circulation. Shops especially smaller ones are wanting cash as there less bank charges. I think people are switching to more more local or more environmentally better practice
I have always used cash wherever possible. I have always preferred to. I have heard some shops won't accept cash, if that was the case, they wouldn't have my custom. It's so much easier to budget money when it's cash. Plus I need cash to pay quite a few people, such as window cleaner, house cleaner and gardener.
I've always got some cash in the house if I should need it. (I don't physically go to shops) But it's getting harder than ever to get cash these days because my local bank has closed, that meant the ATM machine went as well. All the other banks had closed a few years ago, and the local shop doesn't do cashback anymore.
mudgesheila50 loads of bands are closing. One by me is closing. It's a shame as it's really popular and busy. God knows why the powers that be have decided to shut it
Our local shop put up a post saying every time someone pays by card they have to pay a fee and it's crippling them, so I try to keep some cash for when I visit there.
I nearly always use cash because I can better gauge how much I am spending. When you use debit cards you all to easily lose count.
All the trades people I have used for my house over the last couple of years have insisted on being paid cash. It was a right pain getting the money out as the nearest bank is miles away from where I live. One tradesperson I used was more than happy to be paid by a simple bank transfer and was paid within a few minutes without any hassle.
I rarely do as it’s much more convenient to pay with card. Now and again I eat at restaurants that are cash only, but many accept cards now
