We Have a Shiny New Look
Feedback
Hi everyone
We’ve put an update live this morning that is probably the biggest single (visual) change we’ve had since launching.
Please give it a go and let us know what you think
Here’s a brief explanation of the changes and what we’re trying to achieve.
- We want Latest Deals to be as intuitive as possible to new members. To this end, we’ve tried to create a “familiar” layout and to make the “like/heart” action far more Ronseal. i.e. it does what it says on the tin. Liking is the core of Latest Deals as, without it, we have no idea if a deal is good or bad! By having an obvious like button we’re hoping more people will join in and help grow the community. After all, the more people voting on stuff the better idea we have as to the quality of a deal.
- On the homepage we have the challenge of conveying quite a few things. e.g. what a deal is, how much it costs, where it’s from, if it’s good/bad, how to get it, the ability to like it, the fact we’re a community website and that people have shared everything on Latest Deals. We have to balance that with not being overwhelming. If there’s too much going on it not only looks unpleasant but scares people away as they don’t know where to look or what to do.
- Another thing we were keen to fit in on the homepage was space for a menu. You’ll now see the little three dots. This menu gives us infinite possibilities going forwards. Recently someone suggested the ability to “favourite” a deal to save it for later. We now have space when we add that functionality in a future update. Similarly, compers can now mark a competition as entered straight from the homepage. Nice. (Even if I say so myself )
- We also want to accommodate the in-and-out visitors to our website who just want the deal. For those guys, we’ve added a quick link from the homepage to “Get” the deal. No faffing required. This has the added bonus of doubling up as a quick-link to enter competitions for our awesome army of compers. We’re hoping this is a welcome addition!
- On what we call the “detail” page of a deal (the page you get when you click through from the homepage) we were accumulating an ever increasing amount of information that we wanted to convey:
- How big a saving/discount is the deal?
- Has the deal expired?
- Is the deal in-store only?
- Does the freebie have a postage and packaging cost? (for more on this new feature see below!)
- We only imagine more of these things will come over time. Up until now, we’d been squeezing in this information wherever we could fit it. Sadly - we somewhat ran out of space! We’ve now created a new area on the “detail” page where all this information can be grouped and easily seen. Hopefully this’ll make adding new features in the future much easier.
Between us internally, we think we’ve almost, nearly got the right balance with this design. However, we most definitely do not know best. You guys do. So please, take this chat thread as an opportunity to say what you like/dislike and we’ll hoover up all the feedback and try and create something that makes everyone happy!
As well as the obvious visual changes, we’ve also snuck in quite a lot of other changes:
- All the behind-the-scenes code that helps display the homepage and detailed post pages has been rewritten. It grew organically over time and became a bit of a behemoth. It’s now back under control and any future changes (whether reverting to the previous design or tweaking this new one) will be 100% easier.
- We’ve added a new space when sharing a freebie to specify the delivery/P&P cost. We know there’s been a lot of discussion of whether or not a freebie with a postage cost is a freebie or a deal. We definitely see both sides of the coin and so thought this may be a good way forward. If the cost is specified a little truck icon will appear on the freebie along with the P&P charge. In the future, we can hopefully provide an option to automatically filter freebies depending on whether or not you want to include those with P&P costs.
- We’ve added a button to share deals on WhatsApp for people on their mobiles.
- We’ve revamped the signup/login pages to hopefully make them less confusing and easier to use. Poor Tom was inundated with people struggling having forgotten their password. Hopefully the new layout makes it much more obvious what to do if you’re having difficulties logging in.
- We’ve tried to improve the “touchability" (pretty sure that’s not a word ) of buttons on Latest Deals. We’ve gone through and made them all bigger/easier to press when using your mobile. A big ol’ chunk of our members and visitors use the site on their mobile and so we want to make it as user friendly as possible.
- The dropdown menus on the site have now been optimised for mobile devices - they should now pop up at the bottom (much like menus in actual apps work) and be easier to navigate.
That’s it for this round of updates! Please do comment below with any feedback. Good or bad, we’re all ears!
Well done Kelsey!
Freebie Hunters - you will be happy to read about the new change for freebies requiring a delivery charge.
Mobile Users - 75% of members use Latest Deals on mobile! This update will help make it easier to use: especially the ‘Like‘ and ‘Get’ buttons.
Well done Kelsey !!!
I opened the LD page & it all looked very different & I literally sat there like > Lol
It looks very different & will take time to get used to, but overall, a very well done to you. LD has been modernised, & hopefully all the little changes will be very positive ones. I’m looking forward to trying out all the little changes. Thank you very very much. Also, I saw the logo: Thank you for listening to my suggestion from a few weeks ago! I’m really looking forward to the next one (Easter!)
I think that it is much more modern and easy to use than any of the other sites doing similar things.
That definitely wasn't an intended consequence!
I'm just fixing a bug with Facebook login then will have a look
I like the love hearts in the top corner. Look fab, great work. I like how I can see how many comments there are under the freebies.
I like the sound of all of the changes Probably it will take a little bit of time to get used to it but it looks great Personally I prefer the second view of the page as is slightly more compact, which makes it easier to get through them quicker. Also I've already notice the postage cost on a freebie and it makes it so much better. Can't wait for new updates with option to save the deals for later Well done guys fantastic job!
Private messaging is definitely on the to-do list! Unfortunately it's a little way from the top still at the moment but things are ever changing!
For me personally it was easier to keep track of which competition I was up to by hours, days etc rather than date as it is now.
Hi mikebatho thanks for the feedback Would you mind sharing how you use the competitions section? Do you sort by latest then go back X number of pages to your most recently entered competition and work back to the start?
Just trying to understand so I can get a better feel for how you use the site (and hopefully improve it!)
Kelsey Hi. Yeah, I sort by latest, then when I get up, I start by hitting page three, see how many hours ago the posts there are & switch page accordingly.... after the weekend when I don't use the site I start at page 9 then see how old the comps are & work out where I need to be until I get to a comp I remember entering....
mikebatho Evening Just had a quick thought - if you click the settings cog you can choose to hide competitions you've already entered. If you then order by ending soonest and exclude expired competitions I believe you should only see competitions you're yet to enter? Would that work?
Oh.....seems like it do not shows how many percentage is the exact offer. I also think it was easier to give hearts to others, than now...
Hey AgnesFaludi it shows the discount on the deal page but not on the list (at the moment). Still trying to work out a good place to squeeze it in
Thanks for the feedback on the hearts - the hope is that after adjusting it'll be just as easy to hit the like button as the heart beforehand. Took me a little while to stop tapping the heart myself! But if you feel the same after a week please let me know - all feedback is valuable!
Kelsey There is the place.....No like and get needed....I still just want to press on the heart itself....I thought the like is> and the heart is>
Also the background color is a bit light, nearly as white as the deals....maybe on Apple it is different, but on my screen 1 or 2 shade darker gray would be nicer.
here's a question, I've been wondering what the lightning bolt means by the side of the latest deals. When I see it I think of flash bathroom products.
Unfortunately there's not an epic story about our logo's origins. We all thought it looked cool and latest/fastest/lightning seemed to work
If we're as good for deal hunting as flash is for cleaning then we're on to a winner
Here’s some feedback for you, viewing the Latest Deals website on a laptop.
In the old version (pre re-design) there was a space problem with deal post listings in that the ‘% discount flash’ (at top left) and the ‘heart + number of likes’ (top right) sometimes totally obscured the top of the image used in the deal post. (When viewed on a mobile and possibly also PC).
I wonder whether you could display the number of likes inside the heart shape, to save space. The heart would need to be big enough to display up to three numbers inside it, e.g. 2, 55, 999 (likes). Something like this:
I am sad to see the % Discount from original price / RRP disappear in the re-design. I think the % Discount is an essential guide for consumers.
I like the three little dots icon for the menu. And indeed I like the menu idea. I suggest changing the colour of the three little dots from the current grey to a brighter colour (e.g. red). That would make it more obvious that that the three little dots do something / are in fact a clickable button.
In the three little dots menu I suggest changing the words used as follows (From > To)
Go to Post > Go to Deal Post
Get Deal > View the Deal
Report Deal > Report Deal Post
Flag as expired > Flag as expired
There’s a couple of issues here. Firstly it’s not obvious to newbies what ‘Post’ means. I think ‘Deal Post’ is clearer.
‘Get Deal’ sounds a little aggressive. Consumers will want to see / view the deal first (Get Deal sounds a bit too much like ‘Buy’, i.e. before you are ready to do so). IMHO ‘View Deal’ sounds gentler and more appealing and may get a better click-through rate.
Secondly, the re-designed 3 DOTS menu introduces a distinction between ‘Post’ and ‘Deal’ . I think the ‘Deal’ now means the retailer’s landing page / listing for the product. If so, it may be more accurate to request site visitors ‘Report Deal Post’ about the deal, rather than report the ‘Deal’ itself. In any event I think the words ‘Report Deal Post’ captures both the Deal Post and the Retailer’s Product Listing, whereas ‘Report Deal’ may not.
Good job Kelsey. Like the re-design!
Johnny
SandyRhodes It's pretty much universal feedback that people want the discount back - we'll see what we can do!
I'm finding that the tick that indicates a competition is entered is often getting lost in the thumbnail image.
Hey Thanks for the feedback. We've just made the tick green - could you let me know if this is any better? Thanks!
Kelsey It's a distinct improvement - obviously it will depend on the colour and complexity of the thumbnail. Wouldn't it be clearer (and more consistent with other elements) if it was on a contrasting coloured circle?
Looks very comprehensive and lots of good features.
I think the freebie section will somewhat change now the P&P functionality has been added. Adding the filter for this would be good. personally I class anything with P&P to be a deal and not a freebie. But then that's my 'purist' view.
Love the way the heart display now. It's neat.
Great progress. Well done.
Love this site and the changes took a day to get use to buy very happy keep up the good work love love it
Loving the new site! Looks amazing and gives a very good impression to anyone that is new!
I am having trouble reporting a competition post as a duplicate. It is the UK Mums cutie pups competition that I posted on the 13th. I keep getting a message that it is not a valid latest deals URL but I have typed it twice and it is the correct URL.
Morning Could you possibly share a link to the post? I'll see if I can work out what's going on. Thanks!
Kelsey https://www.competitions/win-1-3-lil-cutie-pups-play-cases-ukmums (that was the duplicate link - my link started from 'cutie-pups' which is obviously why it didn't show as a duplicate but it is the above URL that the report did not recognise.
Jaycee5 Thanks for the quick response!
I'm not sure if I've got the wrong end of the stick (please shout at me if so!) but when reporting a duplicate you have to put in the LD URL rather than the direct competition URL.
For example: https://www.latestdeals.co.uk/competitions/win-100-amazon-gift-card-ok-3784
That way we can compare the two LD posts and remove the duplicate.
Kelsey Sorry. I did actually put in the Latest Deal URL. I've done it wrong here. I'll start again.
It's https://www.latestdeals.co.uk/competitions/win-1-3-lil-cutie-pups-play-cases-ukmums
Hi Kelsey
I have had to edit a few of my posts since the new update, & I keep ending up accidentally clicking ‘Get Deal’ as that is the first option when pressing the dots to edit. After doing that countless times, I just realised that in a post, it now says ‘Get deal’ THREE times. I was just thinking to myself that it is maybe a bit too much, & very over-crowded & not needed? I don’t know what anyone else thinks of this, but it’s just an observation I just made.
I think under the post, the big banner saying ‘Get from Tesco’ is enough, & there is no need for it underneath, & especially not after pressing the dots. Because if someone is looking at the deal and the big banner is under the caption, they’d rather press that to purchase the deal, rather than press the dots and then ‘press deal’
