Octopus Energy Giving Away 10,000 Heated Blankets To Vulnerable Customers
If you are a customer of Octopus Energy and are classed as being in the vulnerable catergory then you may be eligible for a free heated electric blanket which is a 20% increase on the 7,000 that they gave away last year.
Heating yourself instead of heating a room or your whole house will save you money and they are trying to help with the cost of energy crisis by giving you the tools to do that for free.
Some of their research shows that up to Β£300 per year can be saved by using a heated blanket to keep yourself warm rather than central heating for your whole house. Heating your home costs around Β£4 per day but a heated blanket costs between 2 and 4 pence per hour.
They will prioritise customers who will benefit the most including elderly, people with mobility issues and other medical conditions that mean they're more impacted by the cold.
Click the pink button to register your interest and when they become available they will get in touch with you in order of priority.
Tips to get the most out of your heated blanket
- Use this as a throw over your body to keep you warm, rather than as a mattress topper.
- Heat the blanket up at the highest setting for a few minutes and then reduce the setting down to a medium setting for longer use.
- Do not fold the blanket as this may impair the heating functionality.
- The blanket works differently to a heated mattress topper.
- The heat may appear 'patchy' to the touch but the blanket works by creating a halo of heat around you and is working effectively.
- Position the connector of the blanket at your feet and keep it unobstructed to avoid overheating.
St3v3cunn1961 its an even bigger shame that energy prices have become so ridiculous that this is what people have to resort to!
I hope those who need them get them and no one takes advantage of the scheme.
lindseymw I know exactly what you are saying and it's very unfortunate that ppl are resorting to this to try and keep warm. Instead of all these cost of living payments and energy rebates why not just lower the prices then no need spending millions to issue payments and other things to "help" ppl. It's not really helping, it's just a temporary measure.
lindseymw it's getting ridiculous and some ppl who desperately need help are being missed out. My neighbor is 65 years old and still works full time to keep herself. She hasn't been offered any help or cost of living payments because she struggles to get to work daily. She obviously needs help too but she hasn't had a penny given to her.
St3v3cunn1961 The UK government are so out of touch with their people. Its okay for them to agree to some increases in energy, not to mention fuel food etc because they can claim it all on their expenses.
I really feel for your neighbour and I hope she manages to get some help from friends and family. I know a lot of people who are in the same situation as her and it breaks my heart hearing their stories.
Im worried about all this but Im one of those who suffers in silence. Keep my struggles to myself.
As for dishing out electric blankets, yes they may cost a little less to run, but they still use electricity and what about people who have larger families? It would be probably cheaper to switch on the central heating than heat multiple blankets.
lindseymw i was thinking they still use electric so it half defeats the purpose. My neighbor is a strong woman and doesn't complain but I find it unfair. Her youngest daughter has three children and works full time and again she has no help from these cost of living payments because she earns too much to be classed as low income although she struggles. Her eldest son left school two years ago and has worked ever since (part time when at college but now full time) . Again he won't be given any help. However if he had left school and claimed benefits he would have been given the cost of living payments. It's sending the wrong message to ppl. I know some ppl genuinely need the help and appretiate what they get but some ppl just take advantage
fbentey8423 Octopus give additional subsidies (beyond the Government ones) to vulnerable customers, so I would hope that the same eligibility criteria may apply here: Those that get a blanket are already being given subsidised energy bills too, so like you say they aren't in fact charged even more! (even if it's a few pennies a day).
Tom I can assure you, they DO NOT!!! Having three disabled in this household, theyβve not offered any goodwill of their own accord other than what every other company offers ie warm home discount.
And seems like a contraction, they arenβt charged more, but then go on to say even if itβs a few pennies. Which is it????
Tom octopus do not give any subsidies beyond the warm home discount which is paid by the government anyway. Not sure why you sen to think this but its not true.
Sadly not, ALL the Energy companies Should be doing the same thing!
But I won't be holding my breath waiting!
Β£4/day to heat your home?? Β£120/month.....4 months of winter Β£480....surely that's based on very outdated prices!!!!!!!!!!
What a magnificent gesture from Octopus energy, I can't see any of the other greedy suppliers following suit, they're all too busy fleecing their customers.
kraton007 ...Instead of putting Fleece ( Blankets) around their customers to keep them warm!
This is great offer bit wish available to everyone. There is a warm home discount scheme available to ppl on low incomes and benefits . Itβs a Β£140 payment for electric or gas. You have to apply to your energy supplier but itβs endorded by the government so everyone can apply . I know a few ppl who have received it over last couple of years . Itβs a simple online form to fill in and then you wait for decisions.
Iβm not sure if Iβm allowed to put link to website here as only joined a few days ago
Alanhaslam This year you dont have to apply for it, they automatically give it to people on low incomes.
Personally I think it should be given to everyone. Its bad enough for people who are working and having to pay full rent or mortgage payments on top of council tax, income tax, NI contributions, food etc without paying stupid amounts for gas and electricity.
lindseymw there is one given automatically but you still have to apply for the Β£150 warm home payment I believe
St3v3cunn1961 sorry I've just checked and lindseymw is correct you do not need to apply this year and will be notified by mid December if you are eligible and what will happen next. The payments will automatically be made by March 31st 2023 so it says on website
lindseymw ..Exactly , we are on Minimum Wage as Support Workers, there's talk of increasing the Unemployment Benefit, yet we are working all hours to keep up with the cost of Energy, Food etc....
These are actually really good. I bought my elderly mom one a couple of years ago as she used to have her electric fire on nearly all day and it was costing us a fortune. Once she had a heated throw, she didn't have the fire on at all during the winter, it was brilliant! Most of the people selling these are jumping on the band wagon and hiking their prices sadly, but there are still some cheaper ones to be found if you don't qualify for a free one.
Very generous. Was dreading the cold weather and bring unable to afford the
heating. Been on the vulnerable list for
quite some time now
Thank you. Mrs Field
We're not with Octopus, but this will surely help some of us out there? Thanks for sharing the details.
This is fantastic great if your with octopuss and let's face it they obvs can afford it with price hikes at least they are looking after some of there customers
