Aldi Crowned Cheapest Supermarket of 2024 Saving Shoppers £393 Annually

  • Aldi named cheapest supermarket by Which? for the entire year
  • Shopping at Aldi could save households £393 annually compared to pricier rivals
  • Lidl came second, while Waitrose remained the most expensive

Aldi has been revealed as the UK’s cheapest supermarket for 2024, beating competitors such as Lidl and Asda for the 12th consecutive month. Consumer group Which? compared the price of thousands of items from eight supermarkets to find Aldi offering the lowest costs.

A basket of 56 groceries cost £100.29 on average at Aldi in December.

Lidl followed closely at £101.48, or £101.56 for non-Lidl Plus members.

Shoppers could save £393 per year by switching from the most expensive supermarket, Waitrose, to Aldi.

Aldi consistently came out ahead in price tracking across 2024, cementing its reputation as a budget-friendly choice for households grappling with the cost of living.

Lidl narrowly missed the top spot but remains a competitive choice for savvy shoppers. Its Lidl Plus loyalty scheme offers further savings on weekly groceries.

Waitrose continued to be the priciest supermarket, offering premium items at a significantly higher cost.

Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, commented: “Aldi’s consistent win reflects its commitment to affordable shopping. With savings like these, it’s easy to see why shoppers are flocking to budget-friendly stores.”

I was in Aldi today, tons of stuff I couldn't buy because of the limited range and lots of stuff below acceptable quality for me. I have zero respect for Which as a consumer group. In the end I bought about 12 items which came to £16 but there was one or two higher value items. One till operating too but I quickly switched to the till just opening before anyone else. I really don't see how it is comparable to a full size supermarket. It's halfway between a convenience store and full supermarket. The best offer though was reduced mince pies which were 29p a pack which I got 3 boxes of. I think everything else was pretty much the same price in Tesco as it was mainly items price matched elsewhere. Aldi is my nearest supermarket but last time I was in there was perhaps 4 months ago.
