The way your stairs look can totally transform the appearance of your home.
And one dad has given us all a masterclass in money-saving DIY by taking on the task of turning his staircase into a beautiful - and functional - feature.
Ash Bunn, 33, a rope access maintenance technician and dad of two from Hull, wanted to create a glass feature within his staircase - and add lots of storage too.
Inspiring himself from Pinterest and enlisting the help of friends, Ash managed to create the staircase of his dreams for just £550.
By doing it all himself, Ash estimates he saved an enormous £4,000.
Ash told money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk: "I saw online that a lot of people were doing the normal glass balustrade and I wanted something a bit different.
"I was looking at the staircase and I realised that the stringer of the stairs neatly lined up with the wall above.
“I thought that I could get a full sheet of glass in there and be able to bolt it on and hide it in the top.
"Then I looked on Pinterest and found a photo of it so I decided to go with it.
"I stripped it all back and got a sheet of MDF to make a template.
"After making the template I took it to a local glass factory to get it made.
“I picked it up a week after and got three friends to lift it in with me.
“I bolted it up and got it level.
"Then I decided to run some LEDs around the three sides of the glass that are hidden inside.
“I then made an add-on stringer to box it off.
"I looked on Pinterest again and saw a few pictures of understairs cupboards.
“I just went for it and started building it.
“I’m very happy with the outcome.
“For the stairs and cupboards, it cost roughly £550.
“The glass was £350, the drawer runners were £90, and the MDF and 2x3 wood was £100.
“I probably saved around £4,000 doing it myself.
“It took me a week not including waiting for the glass to get made.
“I feel really happy and satisfied now it’s done - now it’s time to move onto the next project!
“If you’re thinking of doing the same, I'd just say go for it, have a good think about it and don't be scared about having a go yourself: there's a solution to every problem.”
Tom Church, co-founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, comments: “I can only imagine how much a builder would quote to achieve a similar effect.
“Hats off to Ash for creating this stunning modern look for just £550.
“Saving £4,000 is a real achievement - and look at that amazing space for all his shoes too!
“I’m sure the staircase will attract countless compliments for years to come.”
