It’s the Age of the Internet and we’re no longer restricted to visiting department stores for our favourite beauty buys. Buying skincare doesn't have to take its toll on your bank balance, there are plenty of impeccable formulas out there that won't make your wallet cry. Skincare doesn't need to be expensive to work. Much of the money you spend on more expensive products goes towards the label, packaging and marketing costs. It's the bit most of us ignore but the key to buying good quality skincare (on any budget) is the ingredients list and the actions ingredients have on the skin. Once you know your skin type and what it needs you can educate yourself about labels and ingredients.

Here are some checklist for choosing a product:

  • Do you like the product?
  • Do you trust the brand?
  • Does it work for your skin?
  • Does it make a difference, or maybe it's something new that is interesting?
  • Consider the cost - is it worth it?

Use the same rules as supermarket shopping tips, check the price per weight, how much are you getting for your money? Like many other consumer goods, skincare products are often over-packaged to emphasis the scale of what may only be a small amount of actual content.

Skin Types

If you want to know what your skin type is, simply wash your face using a mild cleanse and pat gently to dry. Wait for at least 30 minutes and then examine your face for any shine. If your skin feels tight, then you probably have a dry skin type. If there is noticeable shine on your forehead and hose, your skin is more likely to be normal or combination. And lastly, if you see some shine on your cheeks, nose and forehead, then you have an oily skin.

  • Normal or Combination Skin. If you have a normal or combination skin, it is important to gently exfoliate your skin every day to keep the T-zone and cheek areas balanced. Your skin will absorb moisturisers with a gel-like texture more quickly. Plus, these are less likely to cause breakouts.
  • Dry Skin. It is recommended for people with dry skin to exfoliate and use a moisturizer. The best moisturisers for dry skin are those containing hyaluronic acid, glycerin or algae because of their ability to attract water and deliver it directly to skin cells.
  • Oily Skin. For oily skin, it is important to use thin lotions or gels, light fluids, as any other texture might risk clogging your pores. A gentle exfoliator works to help balance the tone and texture of your skin.
  • Sensitive Skin. If you have sensitive skin, shop for non-irritating and non-sensitising formulas. Those that are free of parabens and synthetic fragrances work best, as these ingredients can react badly with sensitive skin. Instead, look on the label for calming ingredients like aloe, chamomile, green tea, polyphenols and oats.

Skin Care Routines for any Age

  • 20s. At this stage your goal is to preserve and protect. Counteract your teen skin sins with a daily skin care cleansing routine. Use twice a day – in the morning to deep clean and freshen your skin and in the evening to remove any trace of makeup.
  • 30s. Make use of a good eye treatment every morning and evening to firm the eye area and keep dark circles at bay. Find a Vitamin C brightening formula to help to soothe the eye area and hydrate your skin.
  • 40s. At this age you may notice the changes which happen to your skin start to speed up. It is recommended to use hydrating oils and serums and layer one underneath your moisturiser. Serums are concentrated with anti-ageing ingredients and keep your skin hydrated – this will help to combat expression lines and sun spots so you can look forward to a more even skin tone.
  • 50s and up. In your 50s, your skin might begin to feel a bit drier and thinner as it loses up to 30% of its moisture. Don’t lose hope as you can expand your daily routine to include intense moisturisers. This will help to plump and firm up the skin. You could also carry on layering your skincare with antioxidants, SPF and a serum as you did in your 40s to combat any other signs of ageing.
