A £14.99 Bottle of Aldi Gin Has Been Named One of the Best in the World
Ask a Question
I think this is great as it will hopefully change people's attitude towards budget brands, including mine.
I have tried this gin and it is delicious, but would never have given it as a gift.
I have a friend who is a gin lover, but up until now I would never have given her a bottle of gin from Aldi as she is very particular and it would have remained unopened in her drinks cabinet.
But now the Haysmith’s Rhubarb and Ginger gin scored 98 points and achieved a Gold Outstanding marker in the spirits category at the prestigious International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) has officially been ranked as one of the best in the world. I would happily give it as a gift
Although I am sure the cost will rise now
Am I the only one who buys budget brands for the house but gives premium brands for gifts, hopefully bought when reduced ?
It's not like Aldi makes the gin they would have bought it from a gin producer and would have paid less for it as its a shop brand. Maybe it was even competing with product from the same gin producer but was noticeably cheaper. I drink hardly any alcohol and no spirits at all just beers and ciders really so I'd have no idea about quality myself but do remember seeing something where cheap wine was put in high cost wine bottles and high cost wine was put in cheap bottles and almost no one noticed the difference. Some products are more about presentation and marketing than product quality. I seem to remember a very old wine was tasted which fetches ridiculous money and no one was impressed with it, it was merely OK. For the brand snobs and more money than sense brigade. I've tried various spirits like gin, whiskey and a few others and hate them all which I guess is good as it saves me a lot of money and reduces my risk of cancer. I do love smelling Baileys its an amazing smell but detest drinking it.
BonzoBanana I know that I have fallen into that trap and to prefer to drink premium vodka like Grey goose and Belvedere, as they do taste smoother, but that may be because I know they are expensive and they are a very occasional treat. But as I have them with a mixer are they worth the £.
In terms of wine, I am not too bothered.
I am an occasional drinker, as it's something I don't need so an easy think to cut out of the budget.
I don't drink alcohol. The only alcohol I buy is whisky for my mum for her birthday etc. I've bought her the Aldi whisky before, she said it was nice and would buy again. I'm perfectly happy giving budget brands as a gift, as long as I know its good quality. I'm not someone who is bothered about brands, its about price and quality for me. I always buy budget brands, only buy premium brands when I have to.
I drunk gin once when I was young.Mother's ruin I believe it was once called! Made me happy for a moment then I sunk into depression. Not for me I'm afraid although I know many who love the stuff.
