I'm sure the people of Essex will be extremely pleased to see what their extortionate council tax is being used for, Not.......

Why do these council people think it's ok to throw other people's hard earned cash around like this? Who thought 500k was an appropriate amount? Surely someone good on fb could have sat at home and done this for an average wage? I live in Essex and this has incensed me. No wonder so many councils go broke, they seem to have no idea of money management.

Lynibis it’s cause there’s no accountability, just like in the government. They can do things like this and keep their jobs etc because it’s public sector.

Seems a hell of a lot of money for something like that when i’m sure the same thing could have been done by someone else for a fraction of the cost.

comriegold All the Local Councils in the UK enjoys "spending or wasting " taxpayers money. Have you seen their adverts in The Guardian job sector (available in several libraries in my area)?And don't get me started on the salaries being offered and perks.

More utterly incompetent politicians who no doubt will pocket a huge pension too. Councils should be focusing on core services and how to run them as efficiently as possible plus working out how to create more commercial activity especially farming and manufacturing in their area. We need to improve management skills in this country so much. We are now seeing a huge increase in poverty in this country.

I don't know much about Essex but a quick google shows one council there has huge debts;

Thurrock Council in Essex has debts of about £1.3bn after a series of failed investments largely in solar farms. The report said the council finance director had "unlimited authority to invest in anything he felt fit". The council's Conservative leader said he was "deeply sorry" for the failings.

I mean £1.3 billion is probably about £50-60 million in interest payments alone every year so people are just paying council tax to service those debts. Surely anyone who is so incompetent should be immediately sacked and never allowed to work in a council again and have their pension cancelled due to the huge debts they have caused for their community. Councillors shouldn't even be making so called investments anyway unless they are highly skilled and trained to make such investments.

We have a similar story in Somerset where councillors have made ridiculous investments. They invested in high street property despite everyone seeing the high street is dying. Our council bought the Wilko building which of course now lies empty with no one renting it. So they lost a lot due to unpaid rent too. They also borrowed the money to buy this property when interest rates were low and now of course those rates are much higher and again these idiots will no doubt have a fantastic pension that most people in the real world of the private sector can't get because there money has to be earnt. My council is mainly liberal democrat, Essex appears to be mainly Conservative. The highest percentage of councils facing bankuptcy are labour. It doesn't matter who you vote for they are utterly incompent people with no business or management skills.

Not sure about elsewhere but I live in South Wales and the local councils and Welsh assembly government , just do what they want without any regard to what the residents/voters actually want .
