Abroad or Home?
Other
I have been abroad as much as the next person but find that now I am older I much prefer staying in the UK. The stress of going abroad takes it's toll and my first couple of days I am de-stressing before I can enjoy. Then dreading journey back on the last day.
Who needs all that getting to and from the airport, changing up enough money, passports, tiredness, cramped flight, delays, waiting around for baggage etc. I have a couple of places I still want to see, Rome and Bruges, but I will then be content to drive where I want, when I want with as much luggage as I like and no problems with money or passports lol.
Jamala this one is for you as I agree I have plenty of time, just not the inclination lol!
Well I certainly agree with you about hanging around at airports and cramped flights etc. But at the moment I still get excited like a big kid when going away. I have a 'special' holiday about every 5 years - once I decide where I want to go, I research the place to death because I want to get as much out of the holiday as I possibly can as I tend not to go back to the same place twice. (Currently working on 6-7 weeks touring Vietnam and Cambodia.. so excited already and its at least 2 years away!!!). Ventured into cruising about 7 years ago, it's a happy medium as you can sometimes go from the UK, Mum and I usually do one a year and often hire cars at the ports to explore as generally a lot cheaper than the tours. I also enjoy weekend breaks in the UK because I love this country and it offers so much so don't blame you at all for wanting to explore more, I'm in Winchester in Nov and yes I know what I want to see/do already! Then I work really hard in between to pay for all this ..... (Good luck with the Bruges competition!)
I agree about cruising Jamala, one of my best holidays was a nile cruise. What a coincidence, I am in Winchester beginning of October for the history weekend and staying with my sister who lives nearby. Going to 3 lectures afternoon and evening so will see the cathedral a.m.
You sound very adventurous, must admit places like Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand etc do not appeal to me. If I won a holiday I would put aside my dislike of traveling but hope to start touring castles in uk in my little car.
You have it all planned really well and as you work so hard for it you deserve the best time. You will miss comping while away lol.
lynnibis Apart from lectures we will probably be visiting a lot of the same places in Winchester - looking forward to the Cathedral, Hospital of St Cross and Gurkha Museum. My friend and I are not interested in browsing shops but will be there for Christmas market - although evenings we are more likely to be found in a wine bar!!
Nile cruise sounds lovely. If I find a good deal Mum and I will probably do Egypt and the Suez next year.
When I started my own business I barely had a day off let alone a holiday for 8 years so I am making up for it now - big time!
Yeah, so true...getting true the Airport takes 2-4 hours and sometimes the flight is even shorter than the whole before and after things.
I loved to go with train to Paris and Brussels....it only cost 25 pounds per way in total 50 pounds for one person and it was not as depressing as waiting for the airline to open the gates for us. Everything was kind of easier, even we had to go true security check there too, felt easier.
Honestly didn't realise it was that reasonable to go over on Eurostar - thanks for the suggestion will look into that. Make a nice change to go by train. The bestie would be happy as well - chocolate and cheap cigs when you get to Belgium!!
if one wants to see the world and be breathless with the sights! make a step... take a leap... have a wee run to some other countries and places.. but i have to say there's no place like home
I love going abroad, experiencing different cultures, hot sunny days, warm barmy evenings, eating alfresco, swimming in the cool sea and chilling with an iced cocktail. England is beautiful of course but the weather isnt as predictable and you still have the traffic to endure when getting from A to B, it cost a fortune to eat out anywhere decent. Then there’s the fab shopping abroad of course. I know where I’d be if I won the lottery
Ha ha, you are barmy on those balmy evenings, they coined the word sunworshipper for you lot! How about a nice Scottish castle next xmas, never know might meet Jamie from Outlander!
Sounds perfect, love alfresco eating and the odd cocktail (except for the shopping which I hate) ... alas it rained every day of my 10 day holiday in Iceland, the Canadian Rockies and rain forest in Borneo would have been amazing if I could have actually seen them through the mist ... not just the UK weather that can't be relied on!
Ha ha thanks for the spelling correction for the word balmy! I tried to go back and change it but I couldn’t and yes I am barmy on those balmy evenings it’s not me it’s the cocktails Scottish Castle sounds lovely as long as they have heating!
We haven't been abroad for years! We go to Northern Ireland to visit family during the holidays or go up to the North of Scotland as thats where my parents stay. We don't really bother about holidays. We enjoy staying at home and visiting places. Plus it means we can take the dog with us.
Well, that's normal. People are bound to prefer their native countries over staying abroad but there are some exceptions, like those who can't stand their own country for a number of reasons.
