Afternoon Tea, Have You Indulged? How Was It?
Other
Took bestie for one for birthday treat. Had to order sarnies ahead and chose egg mayo, tuna mayo and cheese and tomato, got ham and tomato, coronation chicken (had said definitely not, love curry but not in sandwich) and egg mayo so one out of three i had ordered. Kept getting a whiff of smelly feet and realised when i took a bite of scone that the cream was well off not just on the turn.
Had never had an afternoon tea and was so looking forward to it but ended up spoiling friend's birthday treat and risking food poisoning!
No I've never had afternoon tea, bought a takeaway last week, first one in ages and the chicken had blood coming out of it completely raw, it went straight in the bin
martinlufc5637 I have found, over the last few years, that my eating out and takeaways have seriously declined. I have never had OCD or anything like that but more and more I worry about food hygiene outside mine and my family's home. Had I eaten the scone with the cream on I would probably have been ill and as the smell was so strong it must have been out of fridge for a very long time.
We've enjoyed a few afternoon tea experiences whenever I've found a good offer/voucher and luckily everything has been fine. Sorry to hear you had such an awful time. I hope you complained at the time!
We've also had teas delivered to home from Piglets Pantry and they've been good too.
snoogans888 I sort of complained about the cream but not the sandwiches, we just ate the latter. They were such nice people and I didn't want to embarrass them so gently put the cream to her nose and asked the waitress what she thought, she wrinkled her nose and grimaced. She offered us to take some scones etc home with us but I politely refused lol.
I have occasionally had one at the likes of M&S and Dobbies as my mother and mother in law get one free for their birthday but never had one anywhere posh.
Your experience was awful. Nothing worse than gone off food. I hope you did not pay or got refunded. What was the point In pre ordering when they could not get that right? You are better off buying the Ingredients together and making It.
I do remember having a cream tea In Lynmouth Devon. It was £6.50. The next day we were In another town and saw the exact same thing for £5.00. I got scammed. They charge whatever they feel like. Never again.
Emerge11 I didn't ask for a refund as it was via a gift voucher so although they were paid it wasn't by me. I believe the cost was something like £18 per head and although we had enough to eat there was was probably not even £10 worth of food.
I love Lynmouth, it's a lovely place but doubt the afternoon tea is £6.50 now!
We used to use a local tea room but since Mr T got diabetes we have only been once and he found it all far too sweet. Funnily enough he recently commented about the afternoon tea and we thought about asking in advance for more sandwiches and less of the sweet stuff. The building is beautiful, tastefully decorated, the food is always fresh & tasty and the owners are very accommodating so we are pretty sure they would go for it.
I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with yours
tumblespots I think your place would gladly accommodate food requests as most places do. I didn't eat any cake for same reason so was especially disappointed at not having my scone as a treat lol. I know it sounds silly but I was disappointed that tea didn't come in a teapot, just a glass mug on a saucer on which it wobbled!
Lynibis We each get a teapot of tea (we each select from a list and can all have different teas) at our place and they top it up as necessary - by bringing you a new teapot full!
Really, £29 per person, how on earth is that justified for tea, cake and sandwiches? Advert for afternoon tea in a local hotel which they call an offer!
(Reserve our traditional afternoon tea from Tuesday to Thursday and immerse yourself in an exquisite midweek treat at the discounted rate of £29 per person. With the serene beauty of our seaside setting, carefully selected teas, and assortment of sandwiches, scones, and pastries, this offer is not to be missed)
Pjran if you disect what you actually get it is atrocious, even if that price was for two there is still profit. Unless they make their own cakes no cooking involved. Even if you use a whole loaf and some fillings it would be less than £10, add £1.50 worth of jam and cream, a packet of scones and a quarter of 2 or 3 cakes you could do it for £15 for 2!
Maybe I will start doing them in my diner!
I know exactly the places locally I would go for a cream tea and know they are value for money. I don’t have vouchers though just pay their price. I haven’t tried a hotel one. Some garden centres are a bit pot luck. We’ve had dried out scones before but never off cream.
JLouM it was an experience voucher from buyagift.com/ but I should have gone elsewhere I mistook the place for somewhere I'd had recommended. A cream tea is very different from an afternoon tea but the former would have been preferable
My friend & I had a lovely Afternoon Tea for Mothers Day when we met up for our Peter Kay Weekend, it was at Mary's & Spencer
My Student Radiographer Daughter bought took me out for Afternoon Tea at Ego Mediterranean Restaurant in Sheffield
That must have been disappointing for you both. My family know I love afternoon teas and I have several gift certificates to use. Most are with good quality hotels so fingers crossed they do better than your experience.
Hope you complained, that sounds awful and would have ruined the whole experience. Years ago I had many cream teas but the price has shot up up a lot for what you get.
Oh no what a disappointment for your and your friend. I have been bought afternoon tea on two occasions and it has been very nice, not disappointed at all. I have seen some that are very expensive though. I currently have a gift voucher for afternoon tea at my local garden centre and that is £50 for two people, I do feel that is a lot of money though.
Lynibis , When my partner retires in a few years he has always said he wanted to run a Coffee Shop...
From Support Worker to ...Who knows??
janphoenix51 it is a lovely idea, mine would have been a tea shop but with coffee available. No cooking of meals just making sandwiches, maybe toasted too, cake, and dainty crockery. Book shelves for patrons to read books or mags, pretty tablecloths etc. I often dreamed of winning the lottery so I could open it just for pensioners and they could stay as long as they liked with bottomless tea/coffee and a sandwich and cake for free and just charge cost for any extra. Ah well, a dream is exactly that, a dream.
