Anyone Heard of 'Silent Reading'?

Other

Since retiring i have pushed myself to finding things to do and clubs to join, determined not to sit alone indoors.

My latest venture, tonight actually, is a Silent Reading group. After arrival you have half hour to mingle and chat, one hour of silent reading then another hour to socialise.

I am looking forward to it and wondered if anyone else has heard of it or attended one?

Kitty10 ok. It's a thing I thought I would try as I said above I need to join as many clubs etc as possible rather than become a sad old lady sitting alone at home, but of course I also read alone too.

Never heard of this as a group but I suppose it’s an ice breaker asking what everyone’s reading.

I have never been to one of these but I think it could be nice to talk to someone else about whichever book you are all reading - assuming you are reading the same book?

tumblespots I am pretty sure you read anything you have on the go, so a bit different to a book club as such. Not sure I would like a book club where you are told what to read as there are so many genres that would not appeal to me and I would see it as a waste of the time I have left!🤣🤣

Lynibis I get that, I am the same and only want to read certain types of book, mostly psychological thrillers these days but I have favourites that I reread at least once a year too.

I understand about 'the time I have left!' too, there is a wonderful line in one of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotels (No1, I think) when Maggie Smiths character says 'she doesn't even buy green bananas'! 🤣🤣

tumblespots lol, I don't remember that line but have watched both films, they were charming and a good departure from my normal historical films and series.

Lynibis It's when she is in the hospital bed talking about getting the hip op, she says 'At my age, I don't plan that far ahead. I don't even buy green bananas'.

I’ve heard of book clubs where you discuss what you are reading but not where you actually go to read. Not sure how that would work really but interested how you get on.

JLouM I think it is like any other club with a shared interest really as it is held in a cafe and you can mingle and make new friends over a common love of books.

Well in the end I didn't go. I had been fighting a headache all day and went to an afternoon club forgetting it was live music so didn't help with the headache. I then got stuck in traffic jams and road works on way home and my 20 minute journey took 45 minutes and I just could not face rushing out again within the hour. However, I will go to the April one on 30th and come back and update.

Sounds great.Right up my street.I would join one if I had one nearby although I

wouldn't really want a full hour at the close.

MelissaLee1 I think I misread that, it seems to be 30 minutes each side of the reading but as it's a cafe you may be able to stay a bit longer if they are not eager to close. Have you looked up Silent Reading online? I think it is a big thing in America so there may be more over here.

Is this a wind up?

It's like the alpaca yoga that was on TV this week.

TheChimp I am in favour of anything that gets people out and mixing, especially if older and alone. I love books and often feel frustrated at not being able to share my enjoyment of a particular author or book. If you're not into reading it may seem strange but is no different to philatelists, bakers, crafters etc. getting together.

Lynibis I just don't get it. Why don't you just do the silent reading at home and use the hour in the group to drink wine or just have a cup of tea and a piece of Victoria sponge?

TheChimp ha ha will do that as well but also like to feel part of the human race and who knows, I might meet a toy boy😂😂😂

Lynibis Ooo! A toy boy?

You wouldn't have any time for silent reading then, would you? 😉
