Has Anyone Got Any Idea for Putting Plants in a Filing Cabinet
Ask a Question
Is anyone green fingered on here? I have got a large filing cabinet and took the draws off it. I am going to paint and turn into a large planter. The wheels are on order and I am now wondering what would be the best plants to put into it. Any names or pictures would be great.
My first thought is that the roots would bake when the weather is hot due to filing cabinets being made of metal. Filing cabinets are best used as bbq smokers Julie. I guess if you're determined you could try painting the outside white but I still don't think it's a good idea.
EmmaWright762 that is the first thing I thought of and probably why most planters are wood or some sort of pottery. I didn't like to make a comment as I could offer no advice to Julie. I suppose it might be a wooden filing cabinet, I have one with two draws and it would look nice on it's back as a planter.
EmmaWright762 Interesting I got the idea from Alan Tishmark when he did up a garden for someone. Never thought of the heat.
julie781x maybe you could insulate the metal one quite thickly with polystyrene. Maybe Google 'can plants withstand the heat of metal containers'
or what would be good to line it with.
I think it is great you are recycling. Don't forget to drill some small holes in bottom or layer with pebbles or old broken pots.
Maybe a more tropical style plant for the heat..I have just been working on a large planter box.and used the polystyrene packaging from a parcel to line the bottom of it..but I did put holes in planter and polystyrene for drainage..
A mini palm in middle and some canna plants around it..definitely love your idea though x
julie781x This isn't the UK but it sounds similar and it might give you ideas, hope it helps x

Not too sure how this would work but what about some veg or herbs, Green beans, Parsley, Peas,
Peppers, Potatoes or Radishes?
