Tips for Painting an Oiled Fence: To Strip or Not to Strip?
Ask a Question
Hi I normally oil my fence and decking in my garden ,but I think it doesn't look as good as it did this year ,I was wondering if anyone has painted over oil painted fences ,do you need to strip the oil ? Or coat it with something first before painting
What would be the best paint to use ?
Not personally, but I do know from my Grandad that it's all about preparing the wood before painting it. You will need to thoroughly sand it down, use a primer and when that's dry add two top coats for the best finish. Good luck with your fence painting.
EmmaWright762 yes my partner said we will have to do that am dreading it I thought I would get away with just putting a primer on then a few coats of paint its a big fence and a big bit of decking thats me and my bright ideas just because it has black looking bits on it I think it doesn't look good thanks for your comment
I would personally sand it down before painting , but that's a lot of sanding, try a small patch and see what happens
martinlufc5637 I know its a big fence and a big size of decking to I wanted to do it grey my partner cracks up with me all the time for painting and changing stuff wait until he knows this he said we would have to strip all the oil from it so the paint will stick I said we can just paint it that will be fine a lot of work needing to get done then thanks for your comment
kate1310 I'd buy a new fence lol that is a lot of work,, especially if there is a lot of fencing to do, I would definitely sand the decking, good luck
I don't know if you have a slatted fence but if you do please don't do what my neighbours did. I went into the garden one morning to find my fence looked as if it has been rained upon........by a different coloured paint! Their paint had run down the slats and on to my fence!
kate1310 I've never had paint chip off a fence it soaks into the wood which is why it won't work if you don't sand/prepare it first, it will just slide off anything oiled or not cover properly.
When I painted my side I did it very carefully but even so a little bit ran onto neighbours side. We all get on well so I let her know when I was doing it and she kept an eye out for any runs.
Lynibis it makes a difference if you get on well with your neighbours mine has only moved it just over a year I hope she let's me paint her end she's a bit crabbit lol I will just have to strip all the oil off as I want it to look good my fence doesn't look to bad its actually my decking that looks black but I might as well do it all I have a 6 foot fence right round my house
Unless your prepared to fork out for a new fence, I would stick with the oil based fence. Otherwise you will have a massive amount of preparation work sanding down , coating with stain block and then primer before repainting and still no guarantee of a perfect finish as the , problem with oil based products it will actually soak into the wood.
