Apples to Oranges
In the News
The media really are going heavy on the UK death toll today when a lot of the European countries it's being compared to are not counting deaths in the same way. While I wouldn't argue that our government have done the best job, it's completely unfair to compare our figures to those of Germany for instance. If we were doing that, Belgium are far worse but again it would not be fair because they are counting in a different way to the UK as well.
Britain may have the most deaths, according to Press and Government but when you look at it as deaths per million/population Belgium, Spain and Italy are above us in the table. https://www.statista.com/statistics/1104709/coronavirus-deaths-worldwide-per-million-inhabitants/ and as you say each Country is counting differently.
lilyflower Yes indeed, that's my point. If I have read correctly, Belgium have been reporting even suspected COVID-19 deaths so their figures will be higher as a result. If various countries are recording it all differently, it all seems so pointless comparing at all. The way UK stats have been reported today in such a negative fashion must have been a big kick in the teeth for all those people working their rear ends off in the NHS, including your daughter if my memory serves me correctly.
Dennab Your memory is correct, she's still working her butt off. Reporting is all wrong, if someone is in hospital with eg a long term heart problem and get Covid and passes on, do not make that the main cause of death, main cause was heart with Covid secondary. Daughters boyfriend lost his Granda and they wanted to clump that into Covid as he was in a care home - "NO", PM showed heart attack. Far to easy and quick to say Covid.
