Is This Appropriate When Using Deodorant?

Ask a Question

I was queuing in John Lewis collection area when a woman got out her antiperspirant spray and sprayed her armpits. The dress only had capped sleeves. Do you think this is appropriate?

Jackscot Totally agree with you but going by some of the comments not everybody does. We are all different but need to respect other people.

As long as she didn't spray everyone else I can't see a problem with that.No worse than people putting their make up on buses, trains etc.I would freshen up my perfume while out.

This is not acceptable and I would have said something to the lady in question.I have asthma which has multiple triggers one of which is spray deodorant which I never use.It is bad manners to the people around her.

Fair enough she didn’t want to smell, but should have thought of others around her. Very odd thing to do..

Oh no definitely not. What if someone standing close by had a bad chest or reaction to certain aerosols. My daughter has sinus problems and if I know she’s coming round to mine I make sure I put on my deodorant in my bedroom and not my bathroom. She also makes sure her sons use their deodorants in their bedrooms also as she’s very sensitive to aerosols and very little sets her off. But not even that I just think it’s completely wrong, she could use public toilets, that’s what everyone else does

From what position do you think it may be inappropriate, i can see the point about if it affects someone else’s breathing etc. Or did you mean as it’s just not a polite thing to do.

Personally i don’t see an issue as long as there wasn’t people too close to be affected by the spray

jms19 I thought it was an inappropriate place to do it. Yes, it can affect people around her. Never seen anyone do this before in a public place and never want to see it again. Holding her arm and spraying deodorant into your armpits is something you generally do in a private place. Not sure what happens at gyms because I do not use them.

eyeballkerry It's always interesting to hear other people's pov and it just shows we all have different opinions on things. The way I see it, her armpits were on display anyway so her spraying them was no more or less offensive, but I take your point.

I suppose you're in a no win situation on this one, either your eyes get offended by her doing this, or your nose gets offended by her body odor 😆

Just thinking about it makes me cough. I stopped using aerosols years ago because they made me cough.

Pjran I never use aerosols, I have mild asthma but also when you spray as I noticed with this lady most of the content missed her armpit and went straight into the air.

I think the disgusting part was she sprayed straight over the existing sweat

She should of at least used a wet wipe to remove the old then sprayed 😀

telmel I totally agree with you especially the part where she would have been spraying over existing sweat, disgusting.

I don't think it's appropriate to spray anything (especially if it contains chemicals) if other people are near enough to possibly be exposed. Too many people with allergies etc. Best to be mindful.

What a strange person to do this..I can't breathe in these chemicals..it plays havoc with my asthma. Bit selfish of her really. No thoughts for anyone else..

Kitty10 After she applied it the wind sent it in our direction and I wasn’t too pleased. I do suffer from mild asthma but even if I didn’t I don’t want it coming my way.

Nope. We've people use it in the staff room when others are eating. It's like just go to the loo to do that. It's not hard to have respect for others

Jerseydrew I would say exactly the same if it happened at my place of work. We don’t have a staff room but I think it is inappropriate and needs to be used elsewhere.

It's when your in cue and they haven't used deodorant I find unacceptable lol, that is not a good idea if someone like me who has asthma, it would/could trigger an asthma attack

No not acceptable with people in close proximity. I hate sprays anyway breathing in chemicals and makes me cough a lot! She should do it in ladies ( although hate that too) or in a park somewhere if she really can’t wait.

She should have put it on before she left home, it's a bit late when she's out and about and her pits are already sweaty. Bit like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.

I think if she was going to do that she should have done it in the bathroom, but she may be self conscience about smelling and thought that was the lesser evil than body odour.

No this really isn't appropriate she could have nipped to the loo and done that wouldn't have taken a minute

I personally wouldn’t do it, but I don’t have an issue with others doing it - used to it from school when people used to spritz themselves throughout the day as they were conscious that they stank (so I guess it’s a habit?)

Personally probably would have found a more discreet place to freshen up especially for heavy sprays, some do a small squirt of perfume which is more acceptable and mindful to those around.
