An Apt Quote for the Virtue Signallers and Would Be History Changers
Other
I was catching up with episodes of Endeavour recently and heard a university lecturer offering these words to a student who was angry about an issue.
BE WARY OF JUDGING THE PAST BY MODERN MORALS LEST YOUR OWN ENLIGHTENED VIRTUES ONE DAY FALL FROM FASHION.
I was immediately struck by the wisdom of this, especially as I have never found the words to express this sentiment so well.
I applaud those who want the world to improve and to help those whose lives are blighted by extreme poverty etc. But let's look to the future rather than condemn what is past, rather learn from it. Certainly don't enforce minority views on the majority and waste time on petty things like the words we may or may not use.
Let's face it, a great deal of History is unsavoury, but whitewashing it means future generations may never fully know how bad things were, and thus they may make the same mistakes in the future.
blacklabrador exactly. I do wonder how much of our history is inaccurate due to well meaning people acting the way current generations are.
Lynibis Makes you shudder to think that historical places and actions may somehow become diminished. Imagine hearing a watered down version of the horrors of Auschwitz so as not to offend.
That place, and the horrors that happened within, should rightly be offensive and upsetting.
blacklabrador I have been watching (as most will know) a Turkish series about the founding of the Ottoman Empire. It is set in the 12th/13th century and I am constantly astounded by the inaccuracies as they keep depicting character traits of today's world. Mostly emotions that would have been hidden back then. Despite this it is extremely watchable and I am galloping through it. Those who know little history and watch it would probably think they were kind and caring people when the truth is they were quite barbaric and loved spilling blood!
