Are Audiobooks the Same as Reading?

Ask a Question

Do you count Audiobooks as reading?

I both read and listen to books, and it's quite a controversial topic in some of the book facebook groups I'm in.

I always count audiobooks as reading. I do both as well and see no difference. If someone asked me if I’ve read blah blah blah I’d say yes even it was an audiobook. The outcome is the same, just less effort.

Personally i don’t count it as reading but that’s probably cause i can’t concentrate enough to get through a whole audiobook 🤣

jms19 If you think along the lines of, if you had a friend who was visually impaired and they said they had read a book (but it was an audiobook) would you feel it wasn't reading? I feel that you are still taking in the story, just using a different sense.

I do both but prefer the written word .Both have their place but I feel that reading off the page develops literary ability and improves interpretation and composition skills.

MelissaLee1 I think they both have their place. Audiobooks are great for accessibility for those who are visually impaired.

Audio Books are brilliant to listen to in bed,our daughter goes to sleep listening to Dr Who Adventures..

My partially sighted Niece on partner's side & her blind husband get a lot of pleasure from listening to an Audio Book...

janphoenix51 I think this is where audio books come into their own aka for the visually impaired ,youngsters and people who are bed bound perhaps.

MelissaLee1,Yes I supported someone years ago who lost his sight, his Audio Books were his life line,I used to pop them in the post for him & he looked forward to getting a new Audio Book every week..

Daughter is 25 not a youngster but a massive Whovian who loves to listen to Dr Who Adventures as she drifts off to zzzzzz.

I prefer to have them read to me but I rarely bother with either. I used to love reading books but A levels took the joy out of it so just stopped. If I do listen to an audio book I prefer if its being read by the writer as it adds something to it. Probably should do more!

didbygraham Although I like spending time on the Pc I make time everyday ,especially before bed to read a book. It's a great way to wind down even if just a few chapters.I like being read to as well!

I don't think there is much difference, I've listened to audio books and prefer them to a normal book

I think I do, but far prefer a book. It requires more focus and stimulates my imagination far more.

I've not tried an audio book because I reckon I'll either find the narrators voice annoying or I'll fall asleep listening to it. I'll stick to my own interpretation whilst I read. I wish I could opt out of try audio books for free ads.

Of course : I read books in print and have another on audio whilst dog walking or driving or crafting …… as long as you are accessing books it doesn’t matter . Only issue with audio is if you get distracted or fall asleep listening to it . Also if I love an audio I will buy the physical book to keep .

You cant beat the smell of a book or the pages turn over. You wont get that from an audio book.

Technically no, You listen to audio you don't read it. But either way your consuming the story. I consume both. I definitely read more than listen but I use audio books frequently too. Depends on the narrator for me tho.

Reading is reading. Audio is listening. Reading teaches you far more than listening

Audiobooks are good if you can't sleep and the sound of somebodys soothing or boring voice puts you to sleep lol.
