Beef Mince Airtight Packaging

Other

My supermarket of choice has, for some time, been selling mince in those shrink wrap airtight plastic. The mince is squidged into a solid lump and does not separate when cooking, you have to prise it into solid little lumps. I bought some elsewhere wrapped in the older way and just made lasagne, it was brilliant to watch it separate.

By the way, if you use block butter you will know the leading brands reduced the weight from 250g to 200g but supermarket brands are cheaper and you get 25% more, still 250g.

Yes the airtight mince wrap is really off putting. I think you can still get the old type in some places though.

JLouM I've stopped getting in Sainsburys and now get from Tesco but I bet they will change soon.

I think what we do now is just buy the meatballs and use those. It’s the same thing and packaged better. Might need to adjust weight/quantities though for your cooking.

I agree with you, it looks disgusting and, as you say, it doesn't behave in the same way either. Surely the fact that it is still in plastic defeats the object of pretending to reduce plastic. They should have just made the old packet actually fit the mince instead of having all the extra space in it.

tumblespots absolutely. My suspicious mind does wonder if it's made that way to hide something. I don't see it saving much plastic as the older version just had a film across but the newer one covers 5 sides.

It's quite a popular way for mince to be packed elsewhere in the world, wonder if it's supplied from somewhere else now

I first saw this type of shrink wrap package for mince in Sainsbury’s a while ago. At the time I said to the shop assistant that it looked off putting. I’ve heard from some customers that when it’s cooking it turns mushy. Now Co-op has done the same with their packaging and it looks horrible. The same thing has happened to chicken no foil container, just put in the bag and it has blood at the bottom of the bag. It doesn’t look nice when you pick it up.

Sugarbabe hmmm makes you wonder if it's a vegetarian conspiracy to put us all off meat! I will continue to only buy in normal packaging and then, sadly, pay more from the butcher.

I agree I don’t buy my mince in the supermarket anymore as I’m lucky to have a farm shop on my doorstep so I get my mince fresh from them and it’s not wrapped in that horrible shrink wrap. And it’s reasonably priced too

tara73ziva I love farm shops but only get to visit them when visiting sis in Wiltshire. Love browsing the jam and chutneys etc.

MelissaLee1 you said it girl! If I wanted lumps of meat I would buy it diced, no point mincing then compressing into a solid lump!
