Ask a Question
where the best for dvds i would use ebay and cex but i dont want to use them anymore
Music magpie and world of books sell a wide range of dvds, and then there is Zavvi if you looking for all new condition DVD's
martinlufc5637 Paying new prices for DVDs feels steep now, might as well buy Blu-rays instead.
And if people want a cheap Region Free DVD/BD, it's a PS3 which can be easily hacked in 5-10mins.
PhilipMarc I took a load of them to the tip a month's ago, couple of hundred films
Charity stores, CeX (yes I know you don't want, but they're really cheap in store), and Music Magpie.
And possibly, eBay if you buy in batches. People are getting rid of their DVDs/Blu-rays because they prefer the convenience of streaming, but if there's no internet they can't watch it.
Jumble sales, bootsales and charity shops.I seldom pay more than £2 for any unless very rare.
Charity shops are the best deals in my opinion, a lot of them have 5 dvds for £1 and there’s a decent selection. Added bonus is it goes to a good cause. I regularly buy dvds from there then donate them again after Ive watched them
jms19 This is what I was going to write, they are so cheap in charity shops. I saw one charity shop that had 10 dvds for a £1 unless individually priced but only the box sets were individually priced. They had loads of classic movies and series there and one or two rare titles I feel. I tend to look at dvds sometimes just for the stuff you can no longer get anymore and isn't available for streaming. I must admit I've bought dvds super cheap then used dvd to video file converting software and then just thrown away the dvd. Then I've put the video file on my NAS drive. I know I'm allowed to do that legally if I keep the DVD but they fill up the place and I'm a terrible hoarder anyway.
BonzoBanana i think what you do regarding ripping them to your hard drive and then disposing of them is fair enough and a good idea to save space
We have local free cycle events and there's always loads of DVD's, keep an eye out in your area for these events.
Car boot sales are very cheap. I got a full set of home alone for a £1.00 and some others for 10P -£1.00
Each
If you are buying really old dvds bear in mind they deteriorate with age, the same for hard drives , memory sticks and cards
Its good to regularly transfer any valuable recordings such as wedding or holiday footage to a new source
Here if the approximate lifespan of discs , although different articles give different lifespans and it depends how they are stored and how well looked after
The relative stability of optical disc formats
Optical disc formats Average longevity
DVD and BD (read-only, such as a DVD or Blu-ray movie) 10 to 20 years
BD-R (dye or non-dye, single layer or dual layer) 5 to 10 years
DVD-RW (erasable DVD) 5 to 10 years
DVD+R DL (dual layer) 5 to 10 years
telmel I feel like it could be longer. I sold a Commodore Plus 4 computer I bought down from the loft on ebay which was about 40 years old and it also had a backup of Plus 4 games on audio cassette. It was a C90 full of games and much to my surprise most of them were still loading into the computer with its original data recorder. I assumed they wouldn't work and I feel that is medium for software much more vulnerable than dvds. I also have some old compact discs from the 80s and they still work without issue. Yes I realise the data is not as high density as a DVD though. Lastly DVDs are both single layer and dual layer and dual layer are always much more difficult to read so feel like a single layer DVD will last much longer than a dual layer DVD.
BonzoBanana Sounds sensible B , i have a dvd with holiday footage on it from the 80s that i had transferred onto disc and that is still working , but i also put it to an external hard drive to be safe
I think charity shops are probably your best bet. I got rid of my blu ray players and dvd players lot of years ago and gave all my dvds into local charity shop as I just stream everything. Always keep few films downloaded for back up when travelling and no internet access
I’ve seen so many dvds selling for so cheap at charity shops !! Best to go there to check it out! Music magpie website sells them for cheap too!
I use MusicMagpie & World Of Books. You dont need to go onto Ebay to buy them. They have their own websites. I still buy DVD`s because I want the physical disc. Otherwise, charity shops or some kind of cash generator which I believe are not cheap. Car boot sales, etc. So many to choose from these days.
