Best Lighting Style for Living Area?

Hi all, we are looking to to sort the lighting in the living area, and are wondering whether it's best to have ceiling lights or side wall lights to create a relaxed ambience?

Diffused ceiling lights create a relaxed ambience. Perhaps LED colour changing bulbs controllable via wireless would also fit the bill.

I really do not like overhead lighting as it distracts my eyes from TV and even with the dimmer it gets on my nerves. I love to have a couple of table lamps on in the lounge, especially when watching TV.
