Biggest Fatberg yet Clogs up a London Sewer

Ask a Question

I cannot imagine the size of this fatberg , it weighed as much as three double decker buses

And the contents are enough to turn anyones stomach, this being congealed fat and grease from kitchen drains as well as wet wipes, nappies and cotton buds and other unmentionables

It only took 11 days to clear !!!

Talk about heroes , the engineers should be given a medal for clearing this , as well as a tetenus injection !!!

The question is who is pouring all that fat down the sink , surely everyone knows not to ?

Why do you find all the weird stories lol takeaway shops are to blame, pouring fat down the grates , one of my first jobs was working in the sewer's, I've seen these fatbergs, not as big as that though , it's hard long work clearing them

martinlufc5637 You deserve a medal for that M, and yes i can believe the takeaways are mostly to blame , they should have containers to dispose of the old oil etc

telmel we could trace the issue to the shops but proving it was them was difficult, they were extremely difficult to remove

martinlufc5637 I would say this type of disposal is a scandal like the water companies dumping in rivers and polluting them , again difficult to prove who it is and if proven they just say it was overflow

This causes just as much damage and cost to taxpayers and can be a potential health hazard blocking our drains

martinlufc5637 how do you even go about removing stuff like this? Do you have to cut off small size chunks and remove those bit by bit

It's mostly the takeaways and hotels god knows why some people flash things down which they are not ment to like you say nappies cotton buds and other stuff once a landlord kept getting calls from his tenants about a blocked drain each time he sent someone around to fix it it was full of used tampons and towels and condoms he asked them to put them in the bin to get rid of them but they still carried on flushing them down the loo blocking the drains every few weeks in the end he got them out

It’s yet another thing, people need education on, as the more you read of these types of articles, you realise there’s either a serious education gap or some people are just idiots. I can’t imagine the workers were paid enough for sorting that out.

JLouM No, no, no. This is a proper hard labour type of job. Can you vision a convict doing it?

People pour fat down the sink because it saves them time, money and the alternatives are not simple enough for them. The department which employ people to clear these fatbergs know that it is easier and cheaper to clear them themselves rather than enforce compliance from the public.
