The Body Shop Is Heading For Administration, Did Anyone See That One Coming?

In the News

I'm actually shocked with this one, even loyal customers and Christmas trading couldn't save it, I read it started in 1976, was it one of your favourites or have you never shopped there?

No I didn't but all these types of shops sell luxury items that most people can no longer afford, so am not surprised.

I really like their face creams and shower gels but must admit I only buy them when I get a gift voucher. I get given body shop items for my birthday from my parents and occasionally a gift voucher for Christmas. I like their items but think that some of them are a bit expensive.

MrsCraig They always said that they gave price increases serious thought, but their high prices scared off their target audience in the end it seems!

JoTarpley our nearest one is an hours drive away so I don't visit often. I always went in and looked but rarely bought anything.

First I've heard of this but it doesn't surprise me. The struggle is real, even for the brands we are so familiar with 😕

I think over the last couple of years the prices have gone up considerably and when you are having to pay over £10 for a bottle of shower gel I don’t think it can last.

The only thing I've bought from there was Hemp hand cream for MrsChimp and that's only when it was on offer

I don't think I've bought anything from there since the 90s. I do like the stuff but with none local it's not convenient

Leannexxx With my store being near the Town Centre, I've got roughly a 7 mile drive, then you've got to get as close as you can, and then the hassle of the parking, nooooooo!! x

JoTarpley none in my town at all so I'd have to drive and park probably paying for that too or get train. Definitely not worth the hassle . I hate paying for parking as not used to it. Only 1 place you have to pay in my town

Originally it had a strong moral compass but then it was sold to L'Oréal which is also part owned by Nestle two horrific companies one has done a huge amount of horrific animal testing and the other has massively exploited the poor in Africa. Originally Anita Roddick was strongly against such things but then money talked and she took their money. It's owned by some German investment company nowadays so that investment is likely going down the pan. I think the brand was damaged by the L'Oréal ownership period. A lot of the customers of the Body Shop in the past were exactly the type of people that wouldn't buy from L'Oréal.

JoTarpley I'm not surprised at The Body Shop going into administration soon. Years ago, I always purchased goods made by third world countries knowing they are getting at least 10% of the sale. Last year I went into a branch of the Body Shop in my town centre and was shocked to see the price of goods I could easily purchase in the Poundshop between £1-3.

I'm more surprised its lasted this long to be honest. Sad to see it go if only for all the jobs that will be lost.

At first it was new and fun as well as ethical. It was also affordable prices. Unfortunately over the last few years the prices really shot up outpricing me from shopping there.

JLouM That could have been the new owners increasing the margin to pay for their investment which is a risky strategy. When Kraft took over Cadburys they closed many of the UK factories and opened cheaper factories abroad to create a higher margin that was invisible to the end consumer. However they also did shrinkflation on the products.

martinlufc5637 Yes I agree, they might have had the monopoly at the start, but nowadays there is so much competition, prices have to be realistic as most people need to set a budget! x
