Bosses Messaging You after Work....

Ask a Question

Is it fair for bosses to contact you outside of work?

California are thinking of bringing in 'the right to disconnect' so that workers can be free to ignore calls and messages outside of their working hours.

Depends on your work. I was once called but it didn’t connect as I was on airplane mode.

To me it's all about how things are in my job role, if my boss is dead strict with me and wouldn't answer their phone out of hours, then I will be the same and won't answer outside of work. On the other hand if there's a bit of give and take then I would happily answer the phone.

Personally I probably wouldn't mind so much as long as the message (or call) wasn't for example too taxing (too complicated, too time consuming, etc.) to deal with. If it was a more complicated message or call then I would at least hope that I'd receive a small payment or bonus for doing so (e.g.: 1 x hourly rate).

I recall one time years ago when I was working in a shop at management level I had just landed back in the UK after a family holiday over Christmas and I received a phone call asking me to work on New Year's Day... since I was offered a bonus payment for doing so I absolutely did not mind at all dealing with that phone call or agreeing to do the 'extra work', since in the long run it meant 'earning' more money! 🤑

Unfortunately my daughter is my boss so I haven’t got a hope of her not contacting me outside work hours and discussing work!

No I think when u finish work for the day that’s it. Leave ur work behind till next day r shift unless it’s something that can’t wait r real emergency. If we start sending and receiving calls out of work hours where will it end. No when u finish ur day, ur shift etc u shouldn’t b expected to take work calls unless as I said it’s an emergency. Ur own time should be ur own to spend off chilling, spending time with family and friends not worrying bout call from work

I.used to work in retail and never really got messages when I finished work and went home. I would get messages non stop when I was on holiday/annual leave. I would get asked over staff that were not on annual leave if I could come into work and pick up shifts, I would also get asked when I was due back from annual leave even though management approved my time off and had it written in the diary.

My son puts his phone on silent when he gets home and places it facing down. That includes weekends too. My husband used to have to reply to his call’s if it was an emergency.

I like them , but mine are usually really useful, reminders most of the time, on group chat on what's app . Only SMT can send messages. So we don't get many.
