BT Tower to Be Turned into London Mega Hotel in a £275million Deal

In the News

So the iconic BT Tower, one of London’s most instantly recognisable landmarks, is to be converted into a luxury hotel after being sold for £275 million

I cannot believe this buiding opened as far back as 1964 , survived an IRA bomb in 1971 and still stands as solid as ever

The rotating restaurant closed in 1971 and public access to it ceased in 1981

Now it will be reborn as a luxury hotel , it definitely will be no faulty towers

It's my favourite building in London and a good point of reference to get your bearings for people that don't know the city that well, as it can be seen from miles away.

Looking at the new owners website, MCR Hotels haven't really decided what to do with it yet and it will 'take a number of years [for BT] to vacate the premises, due to the scale and complexity of the work to move technical equipment, and there will be significant time for design development and engagement with local communities before proposals are revealed' - www.mcrhotels.com/hotels/bt-tower/ It will likely also cost a significant amount of money to refit the building as a hotel. For example, the Savoy Hotel spent £220 million on their refit and that was 14 years ago - www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-11509773

Although, I'm not sure if London really needs another luxury hotel. Room rates will likely be on the high side, but you will get a nice view of the New Year fireworks display from the top.

Sadly another slice of London in foreign ownership. A very iconic building and one you keep seeing as you travel about in London.

telmel Any profits from this new US owned hotel will be exported back to the USA which is another drain on our finances. At least I guess the refit itself will create a lot of jobs in the short term and be quite a sizeable investment.

BonzoBanana Lets hope they find someone here that can do it B

I was watching the news the other night and they were saying we have a vast shortage of tradespeople here , like plumbers , builders and electricians , people are waiting in long queues for work to be done

The country needs to invest more in training otherwise we will again be depending on tradespeople from abroad for this type of work

Many people in these trades have already gone back to their own countries since brexit so adding to the crisis

I’m glad it’s going to be used again, seemed a bit pointless to have such a big building sat doing nothing
