What Business, real or dream, Would You Love to Run?

Ask a Question

If there were no obstacles in the way and you could run your own business, big or small, what would it be?

I have always dreamed of running a little tea shop, with colourful table cloths, mismatched crockery, a small kitchen to bake homemade cakes and biscuits and of course other beverages apart from tea. I would have a couple of bookcases where people could leave and take a book and i would welcome older people who could sit and natter as long as they like.

I wouldn't get rich but i would be happy and content.

What would you do, even if it is not possible?

I would run a 2nd hand shop. It would be community based. It would charge enough to make a small profit but still be affordable for people on a tight budget. A share of the profits would go to local charities to give back to the community.

There is a place like that in the next town, about 25 minutes away but think one in our town would be great.

I would definitely visit your business. Especially if there were kids books too as my son would love to sit and read whilst eating a homemade biscuit.

MrsCraig bless you, all would be welcome and books for everyone. When the idea first hit me I thought it would be lovely for old people so they wouldn't be lonely and could stay warm in winter. Bottomless tea and 50p per cake, but it is just a dream as shop rents are extortionate here, down south. A brand new shopping centre has never been fully occupied as the council would sooner leave them empty than reduce rents.

Your idea sounds more practical, maybe you could do tea and cake too!😂

Lynibis I think it is a great idea and at those prices you would never be empty. Our shopping centres are the same. It makes sense to reduce rents so there are more businesses opening up, plus more would be able to stay open.

Yes there could be a community cafe too. Supermarkets could donate surplus food and there could be fresh meals for a small donation, which would go into running the cafe.

MrsCraig great idea. Why oh why are there not more people who think this, especially rich people who could help people start up.

Lynibis it would be amazing if rich people helped to start up things like that. Some rich people of course do help do things like that but not enough of them.

For me it would have to be a zoo i think. I love animals and did work in a zoo as an old job, would really like to curate my own collection of animals.

A bit more achievable, i’d really like to run a hotel/b&b at some point in my life

jms19 I like the second idea and would have loved to do that if I were 30 years younger.

I think I'd like to run a secondhand bike shop/workshop that also sells other secondhand goods and perhaps has a small coffee shop too. Perhaps I'd set it up as a charity to get all the tax benefits etc and then pay myself £80k a year and then what is left goes to the actual charity and also means I can get free donations of goods and bikes to sell. That seems to be how many other small charities operate.

BonzoBanana I agree with you 100%. Take for example Niaomi Campbell paid herself £1.5 millions pounds (I think) and gave the charity she was supporting £5,000!!!!!

jam45 hi, I could be wrong but I took BonzoBanana comment as sarcasm, he doesn't strike me as someone who would act like that, but I could be wrong! I am disgusted about Naomi Campbell, I didn't know that.

Lynibis Yes I do resent how charities work in regard taxation. It's like when rich people have a huge fund raiser party for charity and the costs of the food and drink are down as costs with reduced tax and then the difference between money coming in and the costs are very close so very little goes to charity anyway. Some of the charities are a bit suspect too. I seem to remember the Countryside Alliance were prevented from being a charity which was correct as ripping small animals apart as entertainment is hardly right for a charity but a lot of charities should not be charities. Which Consumer Group is a charity but it is clearly a commercial business with very expensive subscriptions and magazines and should not be considered a charity.

BonzoBanana I agree with you wholeheartedly and that is why I didn't think you would be the sort of person to do that.
