Buying Second Hand for Your Kids Bday?
Ask a Question
Would you buy second hand for your kids Birthday Gifts?
Surely saving money is a good thing and it saves things going to landfill? When mine was a baby and toddler I used to get most of them from charity shops.
We wouldn't personally do it, same as Christmas, very rarely do we buy anything through the year, the only time they get toys ect.. is on their birthdays or Christmas, us Yorkshire folk never waste or throw away anything, we hand them down to family or neighbours if they are no longer needed
Yes I've had secondhand goods as presents in the past and given them on occasion. When I was a child I remember a friend having a new bicycle to him but it was secondhand but his father had completely restored the bike even re-painting the frame and looked like new. It was a fantastic bike which he loved. Really we need to get children to understand the value of secondhand goods from an early age so its acceptable to them throughout their life. They will be faced with a huge amount of marketing through their life pushing buying new and spending huge sums of money even borrowing to get it. Some old stuff is better anyway, not everything new is great, often things are made as cheaply as possible over time and you end up with new products being poor products.
We really need to push using products for as long as possible as we have an environmental crisis. I mean a bicycle that is free on freecycle or £5 on facebook marketplace can be virtually the same as a bike in Argos for £100-150 new. Toys especially are something children get bored of anyway as they grow up so rapidly.
BonzoBanana 2nd hand is just as good. No point spending loads of money on something if you can get it cheaper else where
sharri Yes especially for very young kids would they really care if its secondhand for baby and infant toys?
Yes with cost if living atm I always go second hand just depends on how good the item is. Same with clothes.. if someone offers them to my child I will gladly take them off their hands
I've bought my son 2nd hand toys for his Birthday and Christmas before. He has loads of 2nd hand toys, clothes and books. He got 2ndnhand books at Christmas, he was just delighted that he got books. My son is happy with anything that he is given, whether it is new or 2nd hand. His Granny bought him a box full of 2nd hand cars at Christmas time, his other grandparents have bought him 2nd hand toys too. I have absolutely no issue with it.
I guess it depends what the gifts are really. I don’t have children but i think i’d happily do it with a lot of things for them.
I think it depends on the condition of the item. My granddaughter has always taken really good care of her toys so once she’s grown out of it, no longer interested in it etc my daughter sells them and most are gifted to other children for birthdays, Christmas etc as my daughter keeps boxes so they can be reboxed also. My kids are grown ups now but I certainly wouldn’t be upset if someone gifted them second hand item as long as it was in good condition and all parts etc were there. In fact my mil bought big duplo zoo set for £2 out of a charity shop and my 4 kids had great fun, i passed it on to my mum for my nieces and nephews to play with when they were at her home. Now my great nieces and nephews play with it, it must be bout 30yrs old and so many kids have had fun with it
If the condition is good enough then yes its fine. We were always honest with our son and told him when something was second-hand. He saw it as a way of getting better stuff than we would otherwise have been able to afford. He loved getting lots of Lego secondhand especially - ended up with tons of it! DVDs and games too before they all became downloads
