Cameras Replacing Mirrors on EV's Blamed for Spider Housing Crisis

Other

I am not a great fan of EVs as i may have pointed out in past posts , and now they will be less popular with families of spiders as the EVs are making them homeless

Conventional wing mirrors are great places for spiders to live with the nooks and crannies, how often have you gone to your car and had to brush a cobweb away only for it to be rebuilt the next day ?

But EVs are replacing the mirrors with cameras, which are more aerodynamic and sealed so the spider has nowhere to nest

The only consolation is for those with arachnophobia , despite the higher cost an EV might be a preferred choice in this case

Poor spiders. Don't know if I'd like a car without mirrors just as I wouldn't want to rely on tech

Leannexxx I remember you saying on my other post about the childrens mirror causing the fire

It should mean less spiders too L , as they like hiding behind them , at least with car mirrors

Surely spiders can roost (do they roost?) somewhere else on a vehicle other than wing mirrors ? And what keeps them from flying off the mirrors whilst going at 70mph down the motorway?

Auntielettie Those webs are strong A , i dont think even gusty winds can dislodge them

As to why they choose here and not elsewhere i found this explanation

Also i found an interesting video about this and how to prevent them nesting there if you don't want this

This has nothing to do with mirrors being reflective. The mirror offers a place behind the mirror inside the structure of the modern adjustable door mirror, the spider has a safe place to hide here out of view of predators such as birds. There are also few perches around for a bird to get in close and attack.

Suppose this way at least you haven’t got the worry of someone taking your wing mirror off when you’re parked on the street. Problem with all this stuff though, it’s great when it works but if there’s a problem you’re in trouble

jms19 I suppose that's why a lot of modern cars have retractable mirrors that fold inwards when parked J

Unfortunately older models don't so they are prone to being ripped off as you said

Bit of an odd story. I mean how did these spiders exist before cars had wing mirrors? Spiders can web up most places so the wing mirror bit is complete nonsense!
