Would You Cancel Your Barbeque because Your Neighbours Were Vegan ?

Ask a Question

This is what the Vegan neighbours of a family wanted when they decided to have a barby

They sent a second threatening letter after the first one was ignored, then posted it online

Not only that, they requested they kept their kitchen window closed when cooking

I know what i would have said and it wouldn't have been pleasant

I wouldn't have wanted to 'meat' up with them

Besides the threat to report the family was a bit 'lamb', i mean lame, what reason could they have given ?

I think that is awful. Your house, your garden, your rules!!! No one should ever dictate to others. If they don’t like it, move! Simple

I understand that as a vegan they don't like the smell of meat. I have a friend who is vegan and when she comes round we all eat vegan food. However I don't think you can demand that your neighbours don't have a BBQ because you are vegan. Also when it is really hot and you are cooking it is hard not to open your kitchen window. I think they went a bit far threatening to report them.

I agree with all the comments. But it’s made me think more about smokers. Obviously we have some smokers on here. But I absolutely hate walking down my high street into the left over smoke of others. But I can’t do anything about it, apart from try and avoid it.

eyeballkerry I am a bit like that E , i dont mind vape smoke so much as it smells different

But i suppose there is a comparison with this concerning smoke , although from the barby doesnt really affect your health as passive smoke does , but everyone should have the freedom to do as they want

I think they should have a hog roast and invite all their neighbour with the exception of the vegan family. I doubt other neighbours would be able to resist and it would create a camaradery for bbq enjoyment in their area. By the end of the summer I bet the vegan family will have wished they had kept their opinions to themselves.

Jinky67 You could use gas or even electric J, the ninja is good , it makes its own flavoured smoke from pellets , a tad expensive , but you cannot beat a good cloud of charcoal to show off your barby lol

No, sorry they can close window or stay in. Maybe that makes me a horrible person, lots of people will be having BBQ this summer, we can't all stop living the life we know.

Is it wrong.. I'd want to have an all vegan BBQ, not mention what we were cooking, wait for them to complain, ask if they wanted to join us and then tell them what it actually was?

See how much they were assuming before asking.

I've been vegan before and wouldn't expect anyone to ever cancel a BBQ simply because I was a vegan. What I eat is up to me and whatever anyone else wants to eat is up to them it's as simple as that.

Its your own personal choice to eat meat or not so no one can or should impose their beliefs on anyone else. I think its them that should keep their windows shut to keep the meat smells out

Strange to expect a neighbour to not have a barbeque because you don't eat meat. I walk past houses cooking their evening meal and you get the smell of meat, when I'm in a town centre and there are stalls cooking and selling food etc you can smell meat. Sometimes a neighbour is having a bonfire somewhere close to me, its not pleasant to smell and I just close the window. Just seems weird that anyone would assume they have the right to stop others from having a barbeque. Personally I'm not keen on barbeques myself they attract too many flies which makes me feel a bit ill. I detest flies. Flies can deposit eggs (i.e. maggots) onto food in an instant. It's quite common for people to ingest maggots at a barbeque although obviously they are extremely small and cannot even be seen. They will be killed by your stomach acid but I still don't like the idea of it. Very small flies landing on food can be killed by the hot oil of sausages etc so a lot of flies are consumed too and other insects. I personally prefer my food cooked inside without insects and maggots.

What I can’t understand is the vegan family asking the other family to close their window while cooking!! Why doesn’t vegan family close their window if the smell of meat cooking makes them feel sick. I for 1 if I had a garden to barbecue in I’d be doing it every chance I got. There’s nothing like a good barbecue to realise we have some good weather and we need to make the most of it, especially since good weather can be rare in this country. Weathers lovely today and all this talking about barbecues just makes me want to phone my daughters and ask who’s putting the barbecue on.

Most Definitely NOT!

If they choose to be Vegan that's their prerogative and I wouldn't invite them to the Barbeque.

BUT I Like All types of Meats and Chicken and so do my friends and my lifestyle is my CHOICE.

jimmyD so if one of your good friends became vegan you'd never invite them or see them again, how strange....

ShirleyCarter Ah but none of my friends are Vegan and I don't think they ever would be in my lifetime.

IF they did obviously they couldn't come to any Barbeque, but they would still be able to go to the pub and drink alongside the rest of us and stay friends, WHY not?

I think it’s good to be a nice neighbour and take other people’s feelings into account when hosting outdoors (noise levels etc) but this is ridiculous.

If the vegans aren’t happy about it surely they can keep their windows closed, not expect the people hosting to do that.

Absolutely not. I would let them know if I was having a bbq and it may be noisy with people round, but what we have to eat is our choice. If the smell is offensive to them then they would have the opportunity to close their windows or go out.

To be fair S i don't believe many vegans would protest like this

This family just seem a bit OTT regarding their beliefs

I live close to a restaurant , well not that close, but when the wind blows in the right direction you can smell the meat and other foods being cooked

I don't believe this neighbour would be complaining to them about the smells coming from their establishment or asking them to close their windows

They need to think themselves lucky they don't live above a kebab shop 😄

If our neighbours demanded that my other half would just have more barbeques and probably put the barbeque nearer to their side of the garden.
