Chinese Restaurant - Do You Share?

Ask a Question

We went for a Chinese meal with friends recently. We all ordered what we like but it was served in the middle of the table for everyone to help themselves. The dishes I picked were popular with the others.

i had a very small portion because I didn’t fancy the others.

I feel miffed that they all ate mine, do you share yours?

We don't have a restaurant, but if we get a family takeaway, all dishes are shared, but when ordering, we make sure that everyone likes the dishes. More variety, that way

TheChimp sounds like you’ve got it sorted. My prawn toasts were devoured by the others.

Pjran I do like a prawn toast. If too many were taken, I'd be raging.

My partner, our 25 year old daughter & I always order our meals when we go to a Restaurant or for a pub meal. More often than not daughter will order the Vegetarian option , my partner might order something different to what I have chosen so we put a little of each other's dish on our plate that way we all get to try everything ordered but this isn't Chinese as partner doesn't like it that much..

My partner LOVES Prawn Toast & he wouldn't be happy if someone took all his either!!

janphoenix51 I agree it’s nice to taste what the others have ordered because next time you might pick that.

Pjran , yes that's the idea...We took our niece & our daughter to see their cousin then out for a pub meal years ago, our little niece was horrified when she saw us trying each other's food!!

We either go to a buffet or everyone orders their own but no one shares. Not that we go to a Chinese restaurant often but you pick what you want and you eat it. If we were getting a takeaway for us and family then we would probably share.

MrsCraig I’ve not been to buffet in years. The one we occasionally went to closed down after it had poor hygiene standards.

Pjran we haven't been to a buffet in years either, would have been before I had my son so probably 7 years ago. We have one locally but never been.

Well usually when i have a takeaway i do end up sharing but i can also see why you would be miffed. I remember when ordering a curry some of my family members always ordered something then didn’t like it, so they decided to share mine which meant i paid for a full meal but ended up with 1/4 of a curry

jms19 it’s strange that loved ones like to share what’s yours, it’s because they wished they had ordered it too.

I think it's nice to share and taste each other's but not at the expense of your own choice vanishing before your eyes. I think in those circumstances it is better to learn from it and at start of next meal say something jokey like, make sure you don't nick more than a taste of mine as I don't like your choices and I'll have to get a burger on the way home!

This is why we only use buffets, get as much as you want so you don't go home hungry lol, served in the middle of the table just isn't for me

Goddammit Pjran, you got me thinking about Chinese food, so I just had £32 worth of food delivered and there's only me here tonight. Never mind, MrsChimp can have a good feast when she gets back tomorrow

This happened to me once. 3 males and 3 females we all ordered what we wanted and when it came I hardly got none because the men got fed first and hardly any of mine left. I was gutted

Sorry to hear that

How much was the entire meal with how many mates? You should let them know what happened

kitty88uk I’ve no idea how much it was, hubby paid. I did mention it when I noticed only one small piece was left! Definitely order more but I’m not in a hurry to go back.

Pjran I see, what was the dish that you ordered they they all ate it?

Pfft yeah don’t be in a hurry to go back lol 😝!!

You should have gotten them to order the same foods of more than 2 if sharing with many people

What was it you shared that was so popular? A hard lesson to learn but next time order 3 or 4 portions and take any left home in a doggy bag.

hspexy it was the fact that there were only a few and they were nibbled as they were spooning out the dishes.

Pjran yeh it’s a hard one as food etiquette is different in every culture - I would've just ordered more of the same, popular dishes

As a single person when I order a takeaway to get delivery I order more than I need so often its gets split into two meals so the next day I have another curry. I'm not very adventurous when it comes to what I order its mainly the same thing. Occasionally I try something different but I normally regret it and go back to my normal orders next time. I did recently watch a video about Persian food and it looked great so really fancy trying that. A quick google shows my nearest Persian restaurant appears to be a pub in Bruton which has Persian chefs and I guess is about 15-20 miles away. The menu doesn't look as good as the video below though.

Nope never share mine. Even in a restaurant. I may share with the kids but never with adults. Mainly cos they all order meat and I'm veggie. So can't eat what they order.

This question just reminds me of the gavin and Stacey scene on the Indian takeaway, personally I don't share with anyone apart from my lil nephew who demands a spoon of each dish, youbwant to enjoy the meal you ordered not have to pick off others.

Always have to share to get a taste of everything, but being fussy I end up losing out too . I’d make sure you all agree on what to order first like you would a takeaway.
