Are Cinema Tickets Too Expensive?
Ask a Question
Is it too expensive to go to the Cinema?
Taking the whole family for a trip to the cinema can get quite pricey without factoring in drinks and treats on top. Do you think the price of tickets should be lowered?
I tend to use my THREE reward at weekends when one ticket is just £3, so I don’t think I can get any cheaper.
Yes. I get no deals with phones where I am. Our cinema is run down and always empty. It's a shame its got the potential to be brilliant and has a lovely bar area and vip areas but it's so expensive that people can't afford it. You used to be able to go for pizza and get half price but the restaurant is now shut. They also allowed you to get takeaway pizza and bring it in to thd cinema
I have always said that it is surely better to have 100 seats taken at £5 each than 40 at £10.
A family trip to the cinema is out of reach for those on benefits and low earners.
I completely agree. If it was cheap, you'd have individuals going more regularly, therefore generating an income.
I used to enjoy going to the cinema but it's too expensive now, when you factor in, food (treats/snacks) and drinks, travelling to the cinema and buying a ticket.
Fully agree with you, surely it’s better to have bums on seats than none! I get annoyed that Odeon cinema chain charges different prices at different locations it doesn’t seem fair. The same film is £5 where some of friends live about 50 miles away and at my local one it’s double if not more because there’s no competition here
Unless you can get free/reduced-price tickets through insurance (Meerkat Movies etc) then it's out of the reach of the average family. There are many relatively new cinemas being closed. I don't understand why the ticket prices aren't lowered to fill up the venues rather than show the film to a 30% full house. Don't get me started on the price of the drinks and snacks.
We used the odeon super savers tickets today (£5 a seat) to watch the new Mario film and got snacks from poundland on the way, so it was quite affordable for keeping the kids entertained in half term.
Midnightflower Thank you for this helpful comment. Some bonus points have been added to your account as a thanks
Where do you find the super saver tickets? Are they on the Odeon website when you go to book? Or is it some sort of voucher?
snoogans888 its on the odoen website. You just sign up to be a my odeon member (for free) and then you can access the super saver tickets. Hope that helps
Ah ok thanks. I’m already a member but couldn’t see those prices for the film we wanted to see, but it was the new Mario one so probably not available for new releases.
snoogans888 it should work for Mario as thats what we watched. Could it be the day your trying to book? the website says
myODEON Saver tickets are available on selected showings Tuesday-Sunday and all day on Member Mondays, with prices starting from only £5*
We went on Tuesday but definitely didn’t see those cheap prices. I was actually really shocked how expensive the tickets were!
I consider myself pretty tech savvy but found the ticket ordering process flummoxed me a bit as I was trying to use a Meerkat code and a Perkbox code, so it all seemed overly complicated!
When my daughter was young we went kids club at £1 each, went with my sons and daughter pre-covid £2 each. Now it's more expensive when your buying 5 tickets for family it's too much
Depends where you go but generally they are for a one off, especially if it’s a new release. I’ve got an ‘odeon limitless’ £15 a month but can go as many times as I like
I get mine through a sport & social club at work which reduces the cost a lot then take my own sweets and drinks. Finding a deal through work or phone apps is the best way to try and get the costs down. My kids grown up now, everything is so expensive for people with kids
cinema tickets are expensive they should make them cheaper for family’s to go and watch film
We're not low earners or on benefits and yet I feel it's far too expensive. I hate to think how those on benefits or earning low wages could manage these astronomical prices. Cheaper to go for a good dinner out.
Our Vue charges £6.99 for a seat which i don't feel is bad when you consider the running costs of the cinema . They also do meerkat discounts on a Tuesday and Wednesday and kids films on a Saturday and Sunday morning and in the school holidays for just £2.49. You don't have to buy the expensive drinks and popcorn in the cinema , we usual go into Morrisons or Tesco first and pick up our drinks and snacks.
Yes... But, some cinemas do offer lower prices on certain days or times. Cinema memberships are worthwhile if you watch a lot of films. For example, if you become a Picturehouse member you get 5 free tickets, plus regular screenings that are free for members, no booking fees, discounts on food & drink, etc. Plus, cinema chains often offer good discounts for memberships around Black Friday.
Although, most of the money from cinema ticket sales goes to the film studios and distributors. Cinemas make the bulk of their money from overpriced food & drink.
Yes they are We would go more often if they we treat it like going for a meal. This shouldn't be
Haven't been to the cinema in about 6 years. It was expensive to go then. We just wait till they come out and rent them.
I prefer watching movies at home to be honest. Nowadays big screen tv's are so cheap and even video projectors of reasonable quality start from around £50. You can even use them outside in an evening and have a barbeque and movie night. I think cinema's are on the way out and I can't see the point of stopping that. Decent high definition video and audio is relatively cheap nowadays to have in your home.
Last night I fancied watching one of my old favourite movies which was 'The Last Starfighter' I found a 720p version online and just watched it. Movies are so easy to find and watch nowadays and most of the newer movies don't really interest me. Maybe 6 new movies a year take my interest and they are available online at the same time as in the cinemas nowadays.
Yes definitely expensive and not just for low earnings family but also for everage earning families as it's not just the tickets but drinks, popcorn and travel expenses plus sometimes parking charges etc all add up.
Unfortunately I think that cinemas are going to disappear like the banks. When the new ones came along in the 90's they became so expensive. They however forced the old ones to close where we got to watch a movie for a pound on a Monday or Saturday morning
My local cinema is an odeon and with the amount of films which have been and will be released I am averaging a minimum of 1 film and sometimes 2 times a week and I afford it because I have limitless and pay £14.99 a month and it's easy to see why. As long as I watch 1 movie a month it pays for itself.
I haven’t been to the cinema in a long time due to the prices of the whole experience. The treats are a silly price and with children they always want something from there.
If I am the one paying £10 a ticket and buying everyone's tickets then yes. Stopped paying for other people a while back and never once got paid back what I was sowed.
ChelsieLou90 I was in the same position too a couple of years ago. A 'friend' of mine would ask me if I wanted to go to cinema with her, I would be the one paying taxi fair, both cinema tickets, food and taxi back and it was a hefty price usually costing me £50-£60 a time. I said that once she finished Uni and got a job I wanted all the money she owed. Learnt my lesson.
SarahfromLeeds not too good when 'friends' use you like that. I had someone constantly have me pay for everything only to never pay me back and come crying to me about people owing her money. Now I don't bother with cinema as a lot of the films I want to watch end up quickly on Netflix, Disney or Amazon Prime.
I think the prices of tickets/snacks need to be lowered as full prices are outrageous! If I go, I always bring snacks with me
