Should all kids be taught cooking in school?
Ann Widdecombe was on Celeb Cooking School but got booted off the show when she tried serving raw gammon
Yes they should, I remember doing it in school in the 80's, making sausage rolls scones ect...ect...
martinlufc5637 My option was to take it at GCSE but only 3 people wanted to do the class so they dropped it
It use to be tho I have no idea why they stopped it school would get the ingredients and we would pay £2 towards it
My daughter did cooking at high school we had to buy the ingredients she is a good cook. I made sure she could cook use washing machine ect. Before she left for university
Yes, they should is part of life
We would be happy to pay our sons school up to £5.00 to do it. we do try to teach him at home
I loved learning how to cook in school, loved opening the drawer to find the laminate of all the cooking tools, what they were called and where to put them in the drawer....great fun , especially bringing all the scrumptious goodies l made home in a tin or Tupperware container for my family to try..
100% it should be taught in schools and all other life lessons from money, mortgages and pensions. Plus diy. We have saved hundreds over the years by doing it ourselves.
eyeballkerry Do you think cooking should be taught right from primary school age?
As someone who hates cooking, has issues with food. It would be great to have children learn about food and the good benefits to things (not overly into it as obsessing is what caused my hate towards a lot of food) Using fun and interesting facts and how you can use certain ingredients in many different ways. Knowledge and understanding but making it fun should hopefully help future generations in basic skills and nutrition, it can only be a good thing right?
I do think there are certain skills that lack or get completely missed which are super important.
First Aid, Cooking and even BSL or understanding others. The anti-bullying campaigns should not be encouraging NOT to bully, it should encourage positivity and helping others.
Even recycling should be encouraged, maybe with sectioned off bins in the classroom.
One thing I remember and enjoyed in Primary School was the fireman coming in and telling us all about fire safety. Sometimes I think I'm too cautious, but I'd rather that than be negligent.
I also remember the theatre groups coming in but that wasn't to my taste so felt like they were in way too often compared to other things, but those that enjoyed it might have thought different.
Sorry a bit off topic, but yes to cooking in schools, but it is also down to the parents as well as the schools to teach manners, encourage children and some skills like cooking.
Cooking is taught in schools, at least where I live it is. I was taught to cook in school and the pupils I teach learn how to cook during HE lessons.
MrsCraig When I was in school it was taught in early high school for a year or two and that was it. I couldn't take it at GCSE because not enough people wanted to do the class.
SamGoodship our kids get it all the way through school. They cook at least once a week. They learn how to do a food shop on a budget and what meals they can make from it. They learn about nutrition, diet and hygiene.
Yes cooking should be taught to children in schools they learn how to be independent when older and learn new skills
I was taught cooking when I was at school, but also my Mum was an amazing cook so learnt a lot from her.
Basic cooking is a life skill which can be taught family in their home. Parents and grandparents enjoy cooking and making cakes with the kids. I remember being taught how to starch a lace tray cloth, such a waste of valuable teachers time.
I think that would be a great idea.I had cooking lessons at my school when I was growing up and out lol.My first ever chilli con carne.
The biggest mystery is why the 'powers that be' decided that children didn't need to learn to cook! It's no wonder that the sale of ready meals, full of unhealthy salts & sugars, is going through the roof.
I learned to cook, firstly in primary school and then secondary school where I got my Home Economics 'O' level! It's one of lives joys, creating something good to eat from whatever ingredients are on hand and the sense of achievement that you get can't be beaten.
They really should. Like others have said they always used to. I did when I was at school even made doughnuts at one point can you imagine that today wouldn't be allowed near hot fat ! well I am still standing didn't kill me
Yes it definitely should, I learned to cook in school and I made all sorts of things and even did catering for buffets and dinners for the teachers meetings every to planning and budgeting
Samgoodship, we teach English
Maths and his mum teaches him Chinese history as she is
Chinese and cooking
I think it should for sure, it’s an essential life skill and it could be combined with healthy eating information
Definitely- during the average person’s lifetime they will use the skill of cooking more than the knowledge of quadratic equations.
I made sure all my kids could cook a basic meal and bake an ordinary cake by the time they were about 13. We used to have fun doing it.
