What are Some Tips for Cutting Hair at Home?

Ask a Question

My neighbour has asked me to cut her hair. I have no idea how to cut hair. Telling her to go hairdresser isn't an option as she is in dept. I can't pay either. Any hints on how to cut it

Cutting hair completely depends on the hair type, hair length, style they are going for, even head shape etc.

Is it necessary for her to have a hair cut?

I go months without having mine cut. I often go to the salon when they need FREE models.

If she wants to pay, home hairdressers are usually much cheaper. You can usually get a cut around £25 with a mobile hairdresser here, but you'd be looking at £50+ here at a salon.

My sister in law asked me once and I politely declined. I had some training in colouring and styling as a student, but I've never cut someone's hair and would feel so guilty if I did it wrong or cut their ear etc.

I would suggest to them if they are mobile, to call up a local college or salons and ask if anyone needs a free model. Sometimes they need people for certain cuts, other times they are happy to go with the client.

If you do decide to do it, I'm sure there are plenty of videos online, maybe have a watch of some of those.

Unfortunately shes not really mobile. Its below shoulder length straight and always tied up. She forgets a lot so might not even remember asking.

DeBunny You have suggested some great ideas here especially about finding out if someone from a local college could do it. They may even be able to do home visits, it’s worth asking.

If they do home visits they could make it bit straighter but the new style does look better

During lockdown I used to cut my boys hairs, I sat and watched lots of YouTube videos and found one that was easy to understand and follow.

I've cut their hair many times now, still cut my 8 year olds but my 13 year old wants 'fashionable' cuts so he goes to the barbers. You could just trim it instead of styling it. Make sure the hair is wet though (keep wetting it if it dries) as it gives a more even cut to when dry.

I did my youngest sons hair after he got hold of scissors. We just didn't bother during lockdown. Keep it wet that's good advice. I will just be trimming it TBH half of it might be a reason for me to go down to see her shes lonely. It's her heavy smoking that prevents me going more often

Imnotcheap Could you ask her if she minds not having a cigarette or to smoke outside just while your there? My mother in law smokes and I can go there for 5 mins and all I can smell when I leave is cigarettes! So pleased I don't smoke anymore!

After watching a few youtube tutorials i learnt - The first cut you do is your guide cut, suggested to start the bottom middle, so once you've done the 1st cut, move to the left or right and use your guide cut to cut across the same length, hard to explain but hope that helps!

Let us know how you get on!

I can taste the cigarettes after leaving even though I've not smoked any.

I ended up taking more off than she'd said. I wouldn't recommend me doing anyone hair but the style looks better than before so it's a half win. She plans to turn the ends under which will make it look more even.

I told her I've never cut hair and don't blame me if not a good cut.

Honestly I think having someone there was half what she wanted she never sees her kids or grandchildren

Imnotcheap aww that's sad isn't it, it's nice of you to spend a little bit of time with her, she will have enjoyed the company!

I cut my own hair the other night as it was so long and I was fed up of brushing it, it's not fantastic but I never wear my hair down anyway - always tied up so no one can tell...I'll get my sister in law to sort it out properly when she's got time!

I'd refuse. We trim my child's fringe and I cut my own hair. Wouldn't cut anyone else's hair

I always did my daughter fringe when she had one. I don't think she has anyone else to ask

I cut my husbands hair and he cuts our sons hair. I cut my own hair. I just do it a little bit at a time till I get the right length and then get hubby to tidy it up. Haven't been to a hairdresser in nearly 7 years.

Just make sure the hair is wet and do a little at a time.

Mine grows very slowly so doesn't need cutting often

I cut my own hair ever since covid. I invested in a good pair of clippers. Maybe she could go for the Sinead O'Connor look?

Wouldn't look any worse than it does now. She gets fed up of it and chops some off every now and again

There are plenty of online resources you can check out before trying to cut hair. I wish I had such options available to me before I went rogue on my little brother‘s hair when I was a teen…let’s just say, the barber could see the mistakes lol

hspexy would have liked to see that. 2 of my kids have decided to cut their own hair once they did it years appart and hid the hair so I wouldn't notice.
