My house has insulation between the bricks which can lead to damp but of course also helps maintain the house temperature. I get a little damp in places mainly in the bedroom where I sleep especially in winter when I have the window closed. Asda do a pack of 4 de-humidifiers for £3. They are quite large and only 75p each or £1.25 if you buy them individually. They will reduce the amount of moisture in the air without needing power and you place them where you produce a lot of moisture for example where you dry clothes or the occupants spend most of their time. Windows are a good location typically. It's important to remember it is what is going on inside the house rather than what is happening outside that typically causes damp. Always worth having one in the bedroom as reducing damp is better for your health as you sleep. Of course they are not as effective as a powered de-humidifier which sucks in air and removes the moisture. However those are overkill in a lot of situations and risk chemical particles getting into the air which you don't get with a passive solution like this asda product. I prefer the safer and cheaper but slower action approach. Keep out of reach of young children and pets though as the calcium chloride is best not inhaled and if you break the clothe filter at the top of these it will expose the calcium chloride. If you have massive damp problems these probably won't help but for normal minor damp issues they should.

We are lucky enough not to have any damp or mould

Jackscot It's a problem that is increasing as more people can't afford to heat their home normally which allows for more damp which can lead to mould.

Sadly we do, we try to remove it and eliminated it with creams, mould removers and even specialist products. We also try and air the whole place out as regularly as we can without freezing ourselves, as damp and mould is often from lack of air flow.

Our old place we just got told to wash it off and apparently it was our responsibility to remove it and keep it away, even when the bathroom fan stopped working (which never did get resolved after countless of conversations) I'm now an adult with asthma, which I didn't have before. I can't help but think it contributed, but I can't prove it. Our new place we are trying our best to keep on top of it.

There doesn't seem to be much help if you aren't listened to by your landlord and you are privately renting. If you aren't on UC, not in a council or housing association property it seems a lot harder to get help with it (and by all means we aren't rich or we'd have bought our own place) Seems we pay 2-3 times the rent and get less help or get evicted or have a bad rep with your landlord, so we just keep our mouth shut 😔

People seem to want 30k-50k for a decent house deposit these days, but with super poor health and been renting as soon as I could, I'm not quite sure where we are suppose to grab that from.

Sorry slightly off topic, just very frustrated with the whole situation at the moment.

DeBunny I'm in the same boat private landlord and he won't do anything took me 7 years to get a new boiler mould is really bad in bathroom window and door leaks in when it's raining when it's dark it's like a jungle in my kitchen with silverfish, woodlace for the last 2 weeks I've had no light in my kitchen as the fitting has come out of the sealing so that's just dangling

Leannexxx oh no! I hope you managed to get it sorted soon. It’s such an awful situation sometimes.

Just to note I wasn’t disrespecting anyone on housing or anything, it’s the frustration of paying more and getting what feels like less protection, freedoms or rights. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

Luckily no, but I know quite a few who do have black mould, mainly as a result of not having the heating on as much because of the expense

martinlufc5637 I think damp in homes has been reducing over the years but I'm expecting it to shoot up again due to energy costs and people not being able to heat their homes like they used to.

martinlufc5637 I think a big contributor is people needing to dry clothes on radiators because of the damp weather and not having space for a dryer.

We live in a bungalow so the two walls that are the two outside walls ( no neighbours one side ), keeps getting damp and mould! We have only lived here a few years and we have gone through a bed, a mattress, tv, lots of paint! We contacted our council to ask them to do something about it and they still haven’t. We now have a big dehumidifier in the bedroom and another in the bathroom. It is more contained , but I am still having to clean the mould and repaint.

HappyComperZoe That sounds like serious mould. Do your walls have insulation material between them? I got wall insulation and my house definitely seems like it stays warmer for longer or stays colder for longer due to this insulation. It's a successful barrier but it allows some damp to travel between the two walls.

HappyComperZoe Well just thank your lucky stars you haven't got it because it sounds like your bungalow would just be a large pile of damp mush if you had. I wonder what is causing your issues, is it timber frame construction or just very old? They always recommend you have a trickle vent in the occupied and sometimes unoccupied rooms over winter to stop condensation forming. A trickle vent could just be the smallest window open with a tiny slither for air to come in and out.
