Dentists from Abroad to Be Allowed to Work in UK without Qualification Checks

In the News

I don't know about you , but i am seriously worried about this, letting dentists come to work here without the relevent qualifications

Especially when you hear of so many failed operations abroad , be it weight loss operations or turkey teeth treatments etc

The government are fast tracking this to try and alleviate the long queues we have of people trying to gain NHS dentisty treatment

But it says in the article this won't guarantee the new dentists will want to treat NHS patients, they might just set up a surgery treating private only, less hastle for them and more profit

They really need to specify that they will only be allowed entrance to the UK if they take on a proportion of NHS patients

Even then you would be taking a big chance on the quality of their work

Would you let one of these new dentists treat you ?

Sounds like another moronic policy that has been thought up by an idiot. In many countries you can get certificates just by crossing someones palm with silver and a driving test in one African country is just driving forward a few metres and then reversing and maybe something similar exists for dentistry. We should be coming up with good long term policies, importing random people who claim to be dentists and don't have to do any NHS work does not sound like a solution to me.

I can just imagine people seeing such dentists and then pretty much turning up at A&E afterwards to sort out what these dentists have done.

BonzoBanana Exactly what would happen B, it happens when people have botched operations abroad, they come back home and use the NHS to repair the damage a private clinic has caused

telmel I don't see why they don't just pay or subsidise dentist training and tie them to the NHS for maybe 10 years work and if they do private work they pay back the training costs with interest. I also don't see why general doctor surgeries can't have NHS dentists, why separate it out its a medical service. My surgery seems to have more rooms than they need, one becoming a NHS dentist doesn't seem a bad idea to me. It wouldn't be difficult to setup some payment system for those who still have to pay the basic fees for NHS dentists. I.e. you book your appointment online and pay the fee then. That would certainly motivate people to turn up on time.

We need to train people in the UK who are already here, we can't keep adding to the population, our population density is already far too high which creates other problems.

BonzoBanana We just need to educate our Health Minister and accompanying bodies to these facts B, but they just don't to seem to like investing money in our own and giving incentives to remain here after training

telmel When I comes to it the government are so far removed from the people that haven't a clue about what is going on. They get, and pay for, good/excellent dental treatment and don't realise that people who can't afford private dentistry aren't getting dentistry at all. I certainly wouldn't want to be treated by any of these 'new' dentists, especially as they may not even speak good English. Unless the every MP gets treated by them, why should the general population have to suffer at their hands, they could just be pretending to be dentists just to get into Britain.

The surgery where I go have a number of Dentists who trained and qualified abroad , and are now General Dental council registered in this country . I would not however like to be treated by a dentist that wasn't properly qualified , thou there is a new category of dentist now called a Dental Therapist in this country , which seems to be an in-between of a dentist and an hygienist and I'm not sure about hem to be honest.

Mango4 Really??? A Dental Therapist??? This "job title" is news to me!!! As long as my dentist doesn't employ them to touch my teeth under the NHS I only pity someone who has to be treated by this person.

jam45 Yes it was news to me until my dentist practice employed one, apparently as well as Hygienist duties they are able to do check ups , small simple filling, and even straight forward extractions if there is such a thing, basically a dentist on the cheap.

Really 😯 that's quite worrying, more strain on the NHS when it all goes wrong, I personally wouldn't go to them

Very scary. I save up and go private once a year. Thankfully I am on the books now. I don’t mind paying to keep my teeth.

Doesn’t sound like a good idea at all, also if they are going to let unqualified people do this sort of thing why not allow people that are already here to do it.

If you are going to be drilling holes in people's faces and injecting them with novocaine then you need some experience for sure.

Reminds me of a European bus company who went to Angola, Mozambique, or some other country to hire bus drivers and God knows if they even knew how to drive a vehicle, a bus specifically, and the rules/laws of the road.

They're putting people's lives at risk because they want to cheapen out.

Here's an example:

Now, allowing dentists from other countries into the U.K. without checking if they're qualified is also a horrible idea.

Also dare I mention it but some dentists have committed sexual offences against patients previously. Importing dentists from abroad without proper checks could mean dentists who have criminal records or have been struck off for incompetence in their own countries. They could be paedophiles yet end up treating children. I've seen recent news where people with criminal records have come into the country unchecked. It's just a huge can of worms that needs carefully considered policies and a long term goal and objectives not a knee jerk response. Much better to have a plan to have NHS dentistry available to all who need it in 5 to 10 years than some quick fix that fixes nothing and actually creates more problems.

I wouldn't let them treat me. UK dentists need relevant qualifications... so of course foreign nationals should too (obvious) 😬
