It's a job to read the article without signing up and them having to remember to cancel the subscription but how will they know that your car is diesel rather than petrol in order to charge you more?

I don’t see how it’s fair to introduce all these things which were never thought of when i bought my diesel car. Surely the fair way to get people to get rid of their diesel cars is to subsidise trade ins etc but ofc they won’t do that.

They should be charging large SUV EVs more, they are much heavier so will accelerate wear on surfaces plus need more space. I just think councils need to have a complete rethink on how they charge vehicle owners. Someone who has a 10 year old car and uses it very rarely is far more eco friendly than someone changing their car every 3 years and doing high miles.

I mean EV's are dangerous. A recent container shop fire was caused by a EV self-igniting. That took out thousands of vehicles that need to be manufactured again and I guess you might need a whole new container ship too. No doubt releasing poisonous lithium into the seas causing cancers and other illnesses in marine animals. We will probably end up eating those contaminated fish.

A campaign to get people to keep their existing car but use it far less perhaps using public transport or bicycles or ebikes instead would be far more sensible. Large 2-3 tonne electric vehicles are not the solution for sure. Maybe small lightweight EV's are.

BonzoBanana Even E bikes are dangerous B

There has been a spate of them in the news catching fire while charging, there was one last week that exploded in the kitchen setting the house ablaze

I saw the container fire on the news last week before they even mentioned the cause and i immediately thought that an EV was the catalyst , and i was correct

telmel I totally understand about ebikes but then lithium ion batteries are everywhere, mobile phones, laptops and many other devices but when you put such a huge amount in one place like a car it's on another level completely. I think a laptop battery maybe around 40Wh and a ebike battery might start at about 200Wh for a budget model.

telmel Yes the car fires are huge, often needing multiple fire engines, so intense. Ebikes are bad enough but there isn't a lot of material to combust you have a fighting chance of stopping the fire and controlling it but large EV vehicles are on a different level. I think people died on that container ship that was ablaze. Even in the middle of the ocean with presumably many pumps on board they couldn't contain it. I may be remembering wrongly but I think it was 3000 vehicles of which 500 were EVs and it is believe one EV ignited which caused a domino/cascade effect of the other EVs and conventional combustion engine cars. Perhaps more will be revealed in the coming days. One outcome is insurance for EV's being transported is likely to skyrocket so EV pricing is likely to go higher as a result of these fires.

Am I being stupid? Why just diesel cars and not petrol I don't understand. Surely they're both causing pollution and extra traffic.

Midnightflower I totally agree with you. But the daft Bath Council has to find someone or something to pick on and keep on getting "free" money. There is no way a person earning good wages will be bothered about this stupid 50p tax on their vehicle. Only the lowly paid will be penalised.

jam45 I don't drive, so I'm not completely clued up about fuel, but they're both bad for the environment so why just penalise one. Your right about In effecting those on wages more, It's the same issue as taxing cars in London, it penalises the poor who usually pollute far less than the rich who do things like fly more often.

Midnightflower well i think diesel is a worse pollutant than petrol hence why it gets penalised more. This isn’t fair on the car owners though because they were not aware of this when buying it.

It definitely doesn’t seem fair to introduce this extra charge as diesel engines omit a lower level C02 Per kilometre travelled and even though the council try to get people to use public transport that’s unreliable as they don’t run on time or the trains go on strike

I think you should get a discount if your car is parked within the allotted space. Many large cars and estates hang over and out!

Sometimes you are better off using a Park & Ride when visiting a City as It Is much cheaper. Only a few quid. The Councils rip you off anyways for parking charges. Who on earth can afford an Electric Car? I sure cant. Ridiculous price. As with everything else on Finance, you will be paying forever for It. Councils are Cash Cows anyways. Where I am originally from and that Is In Wales. Parking Is Free to visit the Town Centre. And the Town Centre Is huge too. That Is why the Stores thrive with Business. It Invites you to shop especially when you dont have to think of the greedy meter maids (Council) or traffic enforcement officer. (Council).
