Does Anyone Actually Check Their Receipts?
In the News
I found my bank account overdrawn by £500 and couldnt understand. Finally by chance realised their was a large purchase showing for my house insurance. The firm had charged me triple agreed amount.
I was fully refunded but if I hadnt noticed, maybe a smaller amount or just not overdrawn, I would have lost that money.
Makes me wonder if it happens to others. Does everyone go through all their paymenst to check? How much are companies taking through errors that they never fix? Seems it happens alot in supermarkets.
In shops I always check receipts because its always a lot easier to deal with there and then rather than have to come back. However I try to check my credit card statements but I forget to do so time to time.
I'm saving for my retirement so l check every receipt and every bank statement, l also have a note pad at home that l log all my money going in and out daily. I cannot afford to have any money accidents so l do my best to keep on top of it , it's a chore but needs must.
PaxAmerica it was in Aldi someone else stuff was put though on mine I told the woman she apologised but didn't take it off
PaxAmerica I do sometimes but if it's more than 20 items you have to go to the staff to do it In my local
Leannexxx Didn't take it off? That sounds like theft to me. I do find occasionally some till operators seem to purposely charge the wrong amount, they just ignore reduction stickers, perhaps put through most but then ignore one or two. I try to have the reduction stickers facing the till operator so they can't ignore them. Some people are just unfair and dishonest.
I’m quite fastidious about going through every item on my credit card and bank statements. I even save my receipts until I can tick them off my statements.
PaxAmerica I started working in the accounts department so bookkeeping was natural to me.
I do check my receipts, not too many errors but there has been a few like something being scanned twice when I only bought one product and a few weeks ago I did a return at Tesco and the lady actually charged me, lucky enough I was still in the shop having a coffee when I had a notification from my bank to say I had "spent" so much in Tesco so went straight back to customer service to get it rectified.
I always check my receipts and my bank account. Was out shopping with my mother in law and she was charged twice for one item. The cashier noticed his mistake straight away and refunded it but she would have been down £8 otherwise.
I always ask for and check reciepts these days.Dread to think how many times we've all been ripped off in the past.
Yes because quite a lot these big supermarkets seem to charge you a bit of a different price than what you think is
I keep a close eye on my bank accounts. In shops I know roughly what the total should come to and then if it’s way off I’ll check the receipts
Just by chance today..I checked my grocery receipt and found I was overcharged on an extra item..i had 6 the same but charged for 7..it's the time and effort to go back for money that's owed to us..how many other people don't check and the store gains our money..and all you may get is "sorry about that" what about my fuel money for your mistake..
Kitty10 They used to compensate you with a giftcard for the mistake making it incentivised for them to stop making mistakes. They seem to have rid that now
Not so much anymore as I usually use self scan and check the prices on screen as I go, but they are often wrong, and what annoys me is how slow and inefficient the stores are at putting their mistakes right, half the time they don't even offer an apology anymore. I think the more difficult and slower they make it to get the mistake put right the less inclined people will be to challenge them.
Mango4 Thank you for hitting the nail on the head. They seem to want to get customers lethargic about refunding the mistakes. My Asda are terrible for this in Oldbury
I also check my receipts and regularly check my bank accounts. My husband recently purchsed some MAC make up for our daughter from John Lewis, no cheap, he got home and realised from checking his bank he had been charged twice. Luckily it sorted itself out on its own.
I always check receipts before leaving the shop.
I also check my bank and credit card statements daily.
Keep your finger on the pulse and you won't go far wrong!
Yes I always check them, especially if they've had an offer on, a few times the offer wasn't taken off, so had to track back to the shop or supermarket
Yes, even if they are not paper ones. Far too many fraud cases about not too. Pays to be vigilant
I always check my receipts it’s surprising In the supermarket you think you have bought something on offer and find you have been charged full price,
Checking a receipt should always be done and you should never put the receipt in your shopping. If you manage to leave you bag with a receipt in it the person who finds it can claim a refund on the returns policy.
Yes I always check my receipt. There has been a few times where they have charged me twice for one item.I know I get my family and friends to check their receipts. We all need to keep an eye on what we spend.
Yes I do. About 95% of the time. Just in case I've been overcharged, it saves me coming back
I always check my receipts and keep them should there be any problems with the products I've bought. Plus I always marry them up against me credit card statements
Having been wrongly charged in the past I always check my receipts, it seems that errors often happen when an item is on offer on the shelf but the tills reflect the full price. I had a recent experience when the shelf price of a particular soft drink showed a saving of £1.75, I buy a lot of the product so bought 10 bottles - but the shelf price was wrong, luckily I noticed otherwise I would have been £17.50 out of pocket.
I always check my receipts.
The other week I was charged the full price of peanuts even when they were on offer so I went back to the store with the receipt to get back what I should not have over paid.
£1.
You're right, and this happens across companies and even with subscriptions. Keep an eye on everything!
when shopping in store as I go through the check out I do a rough check on what I expect to be paying in my head - rounding items to nearest pound - if the final price isnt in the ball park then I do check a bit closer - have picked up a couple of items which were signed as being on offer but havent checked out as such.
Yes. Having been in business one has to check everything to be cost effective & I still do. I keep last shopping receipts to compare prices with the next one. Not only that if there are any errors I can deal with them immediately.
Good post & very interesting sharing .
Nowadays, till operators seems asking customers,
'Do you like to have your receipt?'
Is it something new or they try to cut down paper waste..?
Some retailers do have digital receipts options.
LIDL app got them!
Yes I do, the assistant at our Iceland has twice given me pensioners discount on a Tuesday when I called in
Never check a till receipt but then again, I always know how much my shopping will be. The self scan 'guns' in Tesco are great as they show the price and keep a running total. Otherwise, I just add it all up in my head, always round up the X.99p stuff to £X
