Doubling the Price of Alcohol?

Ask a Question

Is doubling the price of a pint the solution to reduce excessive drinking?

While tax revenue from alcohol is only £12.5 billion annually, the estimated cost of alcohol-related harm exceeds £27 billion. So, is increasing alcohol prices the answer?

Yeah why not. The price of everything we like or do is being increased - why not put some pubs and off licences out of business too.

I have cancer and I know the treatment i receive is incredibly expensive - maybe they will shorten the treatment!

Can you tell I’m not impressed with the price increases of everything lol

Those addicted to drugs pay so I expect alcoholics will just pay. It would put lots out of jobs and closure of pubs, so no not a good idea.

It's not gonna make any difference at all to reduce drinking if people wanna drink they will find a way to get it

Impossible to double it, pubs are already closing down at an alarming rate already, and it would be totally unfair to those who drink occasionally and with moderation

I DO THINK IT'S A GOOD IDEA OF INXREASING THE PRICE OF ALCOHOL, BECAUSE OF THE AMOUNT OF YOUNGER PEOLE WHO LIVER DISEASE.

My daughter owns a pub so this is not going to help her business at all. We are losing so many pubs which used to be part of the community.

No doubling the price of alcohol would cause excessive debt, poverty, stress, medical problems caused by stress and let us not forget a surge in Divorce rates. Many a marriage has been saved by making a quick exit to the nearest public house for a drink and a chat with mates.

Whilst it may help to reduce the amount of excessive consumption, it will hit pubs hard and they are struggling already. I worked in a pub when at uni, I remember the price of a pint went up every year. The locals complained about it every year but they still came in every day after work, they just drank one less pint. I don't drink and I rarely visit the pub, when I do it is for a meal, but double the price of alcohol will be the downfall of many pubs.

It's not going to help those in the business and I can see more starting to close if prices were to go up, I don't go to pub very often and only have a drink now and then so wouldn't bother me.

It's already expensive enough as it is in the U.K. so I don't bother drinking it.

It's like them limiting how much aspirin you can buy in one go, the shops systems don't flag up if you buy two a day for a week from the same store. People will still drink, they'll just swap to something cheaper, a dodgy import / fake or make it themselves.
