Easter Sunday Film I Watch over and Over.

Other

Easter Sunday and once again i find myself watching Ben Hur.....sorry but i can't help myself. Each time i watch it i find myself amazed that it is as old as me and yet it is full of action unaided by CGI and with stunts that make you gasp.

Have you seen it never, once or more? Like or don't like?

I always had a soft spot for Charlton Heston though it has to be said he was one of the most understated actors ever.

I’ve never really seen it apart from the famous scene but it does seem to always be on at this time of year

jms19 I guess we all have different tastes in film but to me it is a timeless work of great film. It is not a religious film per se but set in that time. Best friends become deadly enemies and one wrongly accused of a crime sent as a galley slave, saves VIPs life and rises again to former status to try for his revenge. None of that will spoil the film if you do ever decide to watch. I just feel it is a great testament to film making before all the special effects and so on.

Leannexxx I love it when people love a film as much as me, but I also know we can't all like same things. I am surprised no one has thought to make an updated version of it. Probably too expensive.

Lol I'm the same, I must have watched it every year for 40+ years, same as Spartacus, I've just got to watch it, my wife just shakes her head when I have them on 😃

martinlufc5637 yay, love Spartacus too, but haven't seen it on the box for a while. Did you see the more recent boxsets? Loved them too but a little too raunchy for my poor old eyes lol.

Lynibis I haven't watched the series, I love these old movie's, they are classics, I will be watching the 10 commandments today, they couldn't make them like this today

martinlufc5637 you probably know of or have seen the following then: The Robe, Demetrius and the Gladiators, The 300 Spartans (1962), Esther and the King (1960). I had a schoolgirl crush on Richard Egan who was in the last 3 mentioned and he died too young. Victor Mature was another favourite in The Robe with Richard Burton and Jean Simmons. If you haven't seem them think you would like judging by what you've said😊

Lynibis yes I've seen them, Cleopatra is a classic also but at 4 hours it's a long movie, Russell crow's gladiator is my favourite of them all

Isn't Ben Hur the movie where one of the stuntmen died and they kept the footage in? Maybe I'm confusing it with another movie and can't be bothered to google to see if I've remembered rightly. Still a great movie mind you.

BonzoBanana that made me curious so I did Google and came up with the following:

"Claims that a stunt man was fatally run over, or that you can see that death on screen, are urban myths.

  1. The 1925 "Ben-Hur" shoot had cost the lives of one stunt man and five horses. There were no serious injuries to people or animals on the 1959 film, but there was one casualty: executive producer Sam Zimbalist, who died in Rome of a heart attack during the shoot. He was 54"

Lynibis Yes you appear to be right. Strange how the death in the 1925 version is often forgotten because of the urban myth about the later version. Maybe it was a publicity stunt to attract more people to watch the film. I love these epic historical films with all star casts and huge budgets. I know they are a bit cheesy at times but still enjoyable. They were big events to watch on TV when I was younger a bit like the Christmas Bond movie.

BonzoBanana we used to have the tv times magazine and I would go through and note the ones that sounded good. If I was lucky enough to see a film (had to go to bed quite early as a child) I would then cut out the segment with the cast, synopsis and any photos of the stars, then paste into a scrapbook😳

MelissaLee1 yes me too! I missed the first part (didn't realise it was on) but it is such a long film and I was happy to catch a large chunk of it.
