Would You Eat Guinea Pig or Alpaca?

Ask a Question

My daughter is in Peru at the moment and sends me pictures of what she is eating. I had added the pictures. I really don’t think I could. Image Image Image

In a nutshell, NO. I was not raised eating these creatures so it would be totally alien for me to do so. I also rather like Guinea Pigs and Alpaca as non edible creatures, as animals to be cared for.

No. Unless I was genuinely starving but still wouldn’t like the thought of it.

I am vegetarian and have been so for may years,I would never dream of eating these animals.I prefer my fruit, vegetables and nuts to keep healthy.I think Peru has a different attitude to these animals and not one that I share.

I would if it was the staple food in my country or there was no other choice of protein 😃

Alpaca kind of looks like lamb meat which I don't really like, but I'd be willing to try a piece and guinea pig... That looks way too small and what's that ripped apart near the end? 😐

PhilipMarc I spoke to my vet this who has travelled to Peru and said they actually have farms full of Guinea pigs, obviously for consumption. As for the hole, looks like fried bugs to me. I will ask my daughter when I next speak to her. She is hiking and camping the Inca trail so no reception at the moment.

eyeballkerry That sounds sad to me as I view them as pets than something I'd actually eat. They're such cute, small/petite animals. 😕

And yes, I know it's contradictory of me in a way as I eat pork, cow, and chicken (not really a fan of lamb, donkey, or whatever).

PhilipMarc We used to have two Guinea pigs. Ant and Dec as we purchased them in Norfolk on the river ant. We do have a motto in our home, we do not eat our pets!

eyeballkerry I had turkeys as pets, but they (3) sadly died. Probably as they were fed chemicals to grow faster before being sold to us.

I suppose if I grew up eating them I might but can't imagine anything less appetising right now.

Alpacas are herded like sheep in Peru so isn’t normal source of food in Peru?

eyeballkerry if you lived there you would be eating alpaca. If we had alpacas as livestock we would be eating them

SilverSurfer Assuming this description is correct, I see why they'd eat alpaca meat:

"Alpaca meat is quite similar to the meat of a deer. It is sweet and tender, lean and higher in nutrition than red meat such as beef."

farmandanimals.com/what-does-alpaca-meat-taste-like/

Actually sounds pretty nice once I'd get over the fact I'd be eating an alpaca.

PhilipMarc if alpaca was livestock here then 90 odd percent of people on this app would have already eaten it.

SilverSurfer It's a cute animal admittedly, but so are sheep/goat, too. So yeah you have a point.

Not me but this Naughty Torti Topaz killed 3 Guinea Pigs years ago that lived in an OPEN pen belonging to the Asian family over our garden 2 houses to the right..

The lady they belonged to came after the second Guinea Pig went..Lady told my partner & I that she had seen our Torti & knew she lived at this house as she had seen me cuddling her! Only way she could see is with binoculars as she doesn't live directly over the garden from us!

Lady asked if we would buy 2 new Guinea Pigs so we drove her & bought her 2...

Months later as I passed her home coming from work I asked how the Guinea Pigs were doing..Oh they are dead she replied nonchalantly ..

I later heard that she reversed into her cat & killed it!

After that lady had 2 tiny kittens & left them out all the time, eventually she & her family moved house & LEFT the kittens behind to fed for themselves, one of our kind neighbours took one & I don't know what happened to the other...

Topaz was in the dog house for killing the Guinea Pigs but they were in an open plan pen...

I couldn't eat Guinea Fowl never mind Guinea Pig!

janphoenix51 Cats will be cats. We have five now. But past cats have caught mice, birds and even squirrels. You can’t stop them.
