Ebay Stop Charging Fees for Pre-Owned Clothes Listings

In the News

Seems like Ebay are worried about the rise of sites and apps that focus on selling pre-owned clothes and are trying to destroy their business model. A bit like when they bought that free competing auction site and then closed it down or bought Gumtree and massively reduced the marketing spend etc and stopped it competing with online sales.

Anyway now selling pre-owned clothes on ebay is actually free of charge!

I just skim read my email regarding this. I guess the likes of vinted have taken alot of business away from them.

I prefer selling non clothing on ebay than other platforms but usually only lidtvwhen I have 80% off fees, so I'll ve more likely to stick clothing up on ebay too now i think as payments will clear quicker, I also hope it'll make buying items cheaper as some of the prices I see nowadays for second hand items are laughable.

My daughter sells a lot of her clothes through eBay. We tried Vinted a while back and literally gave the clothes away. There is the worry people will try selling on eBay instead of using charity shops.

eyeballkerry I think its great that people can sell their pre-owned clothes without fees but do understand about charities being a concern however there will always be people that want to earn money from the clothes they don't want and others who will just give away for free.

I guess the issue with ebay is they are now going to be giving info to HMRC about what you sell and wonder if vinted have to do that or facebook marketplace? So what ebay saves you in fees perhaps HMRC take in taxes.

In the short term it's good for people who do sell clothes online, but as you have pointed out, in the long run it probably will result in other platforms going out of business and ebay having more of a monopoly than it already does

I think eBay’s fees were getting a bit out of hand so it’s about time they reduced something

Ebay used to be great back in the early to mid-2000’s, it was free to list & no final value fees so prices often started at 1p - 99p. I could get some fab bargains on children’s clothes back then but they started getting greedy as they had monopolised the online market place & started charging for literally everything which meant it was no longer worth the time & money listing unless you did it as a “buy it now”.

With the likes of Vinted & FB marketplace etc. increasing in popularity, they’ve got competition again which is good for us private sellers/buyers as it means they’ll start reducing prices to encourage people to buy/sell on there again.

Ebay seem to have upped their game recently though with better pricing & offering discount codes etc. but for the last few years it hasn’t been a place I frequented as it was almost always more expensive than Amazon & mostly just online businesses.

It will be interesting to see if they become popular again & whether they’ll compete with Amazon - if they offered the same free delivery options as Amazon then I think they would become a huge competitor.
