Heating on All Day, is Yours?

Ask a Question

This morning has been particularly cold so I’ve had to have heating on constantly.

Are you managing without or just once or twice a day?

I only put mine on in the evening once my son and husband are home. I am just trying to not put mine on unless I have to.

We have ours on a timer so if it drops below a certain temperature it comes on - but if no one is in the house we don't bother 🙂

Heating? What's that?I don't have central heating at all! When winter hits ..er that's Feb/March I put my electric heater on for a few hours occasionally to warm the room a little. Off to buy an oodie from Primark for less than a score on Saturday.

I try and not put my heating on until the husband I home from work in the evening. I keep warm with an electric blanket and those oversized hoodies that are popular at the moment. Keep your feet and hands warm and if necessary put on a hat. It all helps keep you warm. I try and have a warm breakfast and lunch now as I find that helps e.g porridge, soup, or beans. It doesn’t have to be expensive food just something warm. I also drink more hot tea as this helps. I now have blankets sitting on the chairs so anyone cold can put one over them to help keep the cold out

gjvj I refuse to wear hat and gloves indoors. However in the evening I do use an electric throw plus the central heating.

Not had ours on yet. Not particularly feeling the cold yet tbh. Luckily Im from the North East so we don't 😄. Honestly Iv just been wearing long sleeves & thick cardi indoors throughout the day. Blankets on sofas in evenings are still perfectly fine. We will avoid putting heating on for as long as possible. I refuse to pay these extortionate prices anymore than is essential. Thankfully we don't have kids in our house or elderly otherwise I would probably think differently

I don't use the heating yet as I think its the first day its gone down to 12 degrees here and my house is very well insulated so it takes a day or two to adjust to the outside temperature. I start wearing more clothes before I think about putting heating on. I can tell when it gets colder though as my cat moves from the bottom of the bed at night to right up next to me.

BonzoBanana ....We had the coffee table next to the radiator with a Christmas cloth over,Christmas Decorations & Cards on as well as family photos, everything has ben packed away but the table remains next to the radiator...As soon as my little black cat Phoenix comes in the lounge he lies on the table with his back to the radiator, now his little Torti sister Topaz does the same!!

janphoenix51 I used to have a cat called Engelbert and he would go under the quilt with me which worried me as I thought I might roll onto him so I put two pillows under the quilt so he could sleep like a human with his head sticking out of the quilt but was raised up by the pillows that worked as little mattresses.

Noticeably colder where I am today, up until now just had heating on for a few hours each evening , probably put it on for a few hours in the morning now also, as there is nobody at home during the day most days no point having it on all day.

I have not had the heating on at all yet. Mainly because the lounge rad needs replacing and cannot be used. Plumber's coming next week so no point heating upstairs and diner when I spend all evening on the couch in lounge. I have no problem wrapping up, blanket over me and yes I am happy to wear gloves indoors, why not? Mine are a gift from last Christmas and the forefinger and thumb have special tips which means I can use my tablet and phone with them on.

I didn't have central heating as a child so doubt it will harm me now.

I'm currently working from home, as I've been fairly ill the last couple of years. I'm finding heat changes affects my breathing badly and brings on some of my symptoms.

We've also got a lot of animals, including insects, that need a decent room temperature, so we need our heating on (some have their own heaters)

We do use blankets and things for ourselves and have the heating set to come on twice/three times a day but only if it falls below a certain temperature (which is wise to stop your pipes freezing too)

I try and have the heating really low, but sometimes for my health it isn't the best option.

No way am I turning on my gas central heating until I feel it is really, really cold and it will be for only an hour maybe 2-3 times per week.

Much as I'd like to turn it on, nope, I won't. Gotta make do with coats, blankets, socks, robes, etc.

It's going to be an expensive winter if people can't handle or simply don't want to with less than desirable conditions.

Not going on yet. As soon as I feel cold I do something to get warm, this could be Zumba, Wii or later in the evening I find putting my pjs on and snuggling under a blanket works.

If you are trying to lose weight forcing the body to heat itself burns calories. So try to keep the ambient temperature a little lower than normal and allow your body to burn some calories. I think 18-20 degrees is normal so perhaps 16 degrees? Just to give the body a little work to do, you can burn up to 400 calories an hour if very cold but it can make you feel fatigued as you are using your glycogen at a high rate so less energy for general tasks and moving about. By allowing yourself to get a little cold you increase your metabolism so it can have a positive health effect if your body is forced to keep to a high metabolism due to a low temperature. The body was never designed to have a stable and warm environment temperature all the time so its good to give it some variety in temperatures. As you get older the ability for the body to heat itself reduces a lot though.

BonzoBanana my body has been malfunctioning most of life then as I’ve always been chilly but would certainly benefit by burning 400 calories an hour. I’ve loved the past two summers with the heatwave.

Pjran You still feel chilly but the body will work to maintain your internal temperature at the right level but it still sends signals to the brain to try to find warmth. So if you can ignore those the body will consume extra calories. Also different ethnicities deal differently with cold, I'm celtic ethnicity and have a fat layer above my veins across most of my body but people evolved for warmer climates have veins close to the skin to allow superior cooling on hot days but this makes them colder in winter. Also obesity obviously helps keep you warm the body stores extra fat around the body for extra thermal layers.

BonzoBanana I’m also the exception to the obesity rule, I’m definitely well covered in layers of fat!

My heating has not gone on yet, and only just put a duvet in the duvet cover. Window in bedroom is still wide open. Having said that sitting here now the tip of my nose is a little chilly.

Heating has always been a choice for the household budget . Unfortunately it has now become a very expensive choice !

We must understand our energy consumption , which means we must know our energy costs -scrutinise your energy bills , experiment with 1 or 2 degrees lower on your thermostat or turning off altogether . Only then can you understand what it means to your particular circumstances .

My heart bleeds for those who cannot afford to heat at all (and there are many) . I have power meters to check everything and submit my meter readings weekly to work out how much difference minor adjustments make .

I’m managing without. I’ve got thermals on, and if it’s a bit nippier than usual, I’ll put the hat on. I’m happy to do more exercise just to raise the body temp

We have a wood burner and live in an old cottage. We also have a back boiler so if the fire doesn’t go on we have no hot water so even in the summer we have it on. I still have my summer bedding on as I’m menapausal so constantly boiling the instant anything touched me. Might have to move my bed out to the garden 🤣🤣🤣

TracyStorrie I hope you manage to find free wood. My brother has a wood burner and scans local sites for free wood, he’s not bought any since it was installed.

Pjran sometimes we go into the estate and collect branches that have fallen. But we get our loads of wood from the estate owners that charge £80 for a trailer load. I will be collecting what I can though as I grudge paying that amount. They were only charging £50 per load up until a couple months ago. There was loads of trees that fell with the storms and they couldn’t even give the villagers a free load. Tight gits 🤣. We ordered our usual 5 bags of coal and that gone up from £105 to £165 🤦🏼‍♀️ fortunately my dad works for a furniture making company and get loads of free wood from there although it burns very quick just because of the type of wood it is

We have oil for heating but it still takes electricity to use the boiler. As we are home all day and don't like to be cold we have had the heating on.

I don't know if anyone else uses oil but our oil bill trebbled this year (compared to the price one year ago) and hasn't come down much since then so our tank now costs £1,400 to fill instead of being under £500. The government have stated that they are going to give oil heating households £100 towards this trebbling of costs! How generous.....

Pjran It will last the winter but we thought the £100 compensation was a paltry amount in recompense for the extra £1,000 we are paying out on top the the increased electricity charges.
