Edinburgh Attraction Ideas

Hello everyone we've just booked our first holiday with the kids aged 2 & 4 to the Haven resort in Seaton Sands 19th - 23rd wishing to do things as cheap as possible and wishing to visit somewhere in the area/venture to Edinburgh anyone have any ideas of free/cheap attractions to go to? (Baring in mind we haven't brought the car)

I live in Edinburgh and the attractions aren't all that cheap! I will ask some friends. Most kids under 5 are free from what I remember so should save some money there.
There is a national museum we are going to that is totally free, some attractions say children under 5 are free but the prices of adults seems to be bumped up. Quite wary as I heard rumors of the beast from the east is coming back so not looking forward to being in a caravan at Haven for that.. hopefully if we get hit we will receive some form of refund even though it's nobodys fault :/
