Should Elderly Drivers Take a Retest after This Latest Accident ?

Ask a Question

This was very sad what happened to this couple but i dont think drivers should suffer the trauma of a retest because of one incident

I bet there are far more serious accidents committed by drunk or drugged or just young aggressive drivers than elderly people, who have experience and patience on their side

How many times do you read about some idiot seriously injuring or killing families in other vehicles becaused they were speeding etc

Do they have to retake their test, no, they usually get a one or two year maximum ban and a slap on the wrist

I would say this is just more age discrimination and a way to take even more from our pockets

Years of experience make up for age in my eyes

Ban this driver by all means but dont tar everybody with the same brush

Would the Duke of Edinburgh have been made to retake his test when he pranged his car at 97, i doubt it

People are killed in road accidents every day not necessarily caused by elderly drivers.

Pjran Exactly my point P , it stinks of ageism

Pjran Most of the time it's by people who don't even have a driver's license or acquired one illegally.

Indeed, ageism at it's best.

They are plenty of other deaths on the roads and I think young boy racers contribute greatly to them. Perhaps they should start with stricter controls on who should get a licence at the outset - not just a test but personality tests too?

The fact is that we can regulate and regulate but these things will always happen regardless. Do we really want more control imposed on us?

We all get old.

Many of us don't have any bus services or public transport in order to get to the shops either... I really don't think that taking away licences isn't the answer (although it would suit the government to get clearer roads).

No they shouldn't unless there over a certain age but most younger drivers have more accidents than older generation just read a news feed a older man never had a licence but he's been banned from the roads after having a accident on his mobility scooter wtf half of them people on these scooters need banning from the roads there dangerous

It's a difficult subject because some elderly drivers are more than capable to be on the road

It should be up to the individual if they retake test

It shouldn't just apply to elderly drivers. I think if anyone has an accident which is judged to be their fault down to dangerous driving then they should have to retake their test. it should be based on the driving standards not the age of the driver

I would prefer to do a retest every 3 years or so than be told I had to stop driving at a set age. I know that isn't strictly what this chat is about but I agree with others. A 70 year old can be as good a driver as a 20 something. In fact I have always thought children shouldn't be allowed to drive until 20/21 as they mature a lot from 17 to 20.

Lynibis The only problem with retests is you have to trust the system, its all about money nowadays L, so you could be failed deliberately to force another costly retest and more lessons, it might sound like a conspiracy theory but after the post office scandal it shows anything is possible
