Have You Ever given Blood?
Ask a Question
Have you ever given blood?
The NHS is urgently seeking blood donors following a cyber attack affecting donations. What are your thoughts on this, and what might prevent you from donating?
I would love to give blood, but I have been told by doctors I can not because of having cancer in the past
Look, I have huge respect for the NHS, but I'm not giving anyone my blood. It's my body, my blood.
Furthermore, I'm against blood transfusions so that's yet another reason I'd avoid doing so. I'm not a Jehovah's Witness member, though I agree with them about their stance on blood transfusions.
Lastly, there's approximately 8 billion humans in the world so surely that's plenty of people who are willing to give theirs.
Please respect people's decisions (not directed at any one in particular).
PhilipMarc really? Lol what if your child needed a blood transfusion what would you do?
PhilipMarc you are more than entitled to your opinion of course- but I would just like to ask would you rather die than accept blood? I am lucky to be alive as I have cancer and because I have been so close to death and am now incurable. I will do anything to be around for my children and grandchildren as long as possible.
Leannexxx Agreed. I can't imagine anyone standing by and letting their child or someone they love die for want of a transfusion. Conversely I am proud to have given and possibly saved someone's life. I am sure Philip would accept blood if it saved his or a loved one's life. Yes it's our body and we can choose but I like to think I would give what I am happy to take. By the same token I will donate any part of my body that can be used when I pass.
PhilipMarc Absolutely no judgement is intended from my post, it's just a discussion.
I grew up with family members who were Jehovah's Witnesses so I respect anyones decision on these kinds of matters.
I have not given blood cos of the medication I am on other members of my family and friends do
I used to give blood as i am O negative which can be given to everyone- but I can’t now as I have cancer.
My husband gave blood for nearly 50 years but they stopped wanting his donation as he became too old.He attended lots of presentations for those who gave blood. He was upset when they stopped his donations due to his age.Give blood if you can as it is always appreciated.
I used to quite regularly give blood but due to the medication I’m taking at the moment I can’t give it for a while
I used to but you have to stop at a certain age. Still, hope my red stuff helped a few people.
I have in the past and would again but have very superficial veins and am on life meds so it's complicated!
I haven't it's something I wanted to do having seen my mum and cousin doing it. But I couldn't because I was underweight at the time plus I have problems with my kidneys so that's another reason why I can't. It's a really good thing to do if you can. The Russian cyber attack is terrible hopefully no one died as a result.
I used to give blood regularly, I haven't done for a few years though, I'm on a large dose of blood thinners, so my blood now wouldn't be much good, it's like water
I've a fairly rare blood type, rhesus b negative. It's such a pity that l can not give blood because of all the medicine l have to take it is not useable.
To be honest i have never given blood as it sends me funny and i have to lie down when having blood taken. My blood group is the most common though so i don’t feel as bad, if there was a shortage of my type I’d definitely do it.
I have been giving bloody for years got lots of badges etc, since having my son I haven’t seen going as regular. Everyone that can should give blood, you might need it one day
I haven't given blood before but happily would. Our son had a blood transfusion during his 12 hour open heart surgery. The person who donated it helped save his life. I will be forever grateful.
It's been many years since i've given blood, don't see it advertised anymore to donate so not given it a thought to be honest, will look into it though.
I‘ve been donating for years and never had any problems. However the biggest issue now is getting an appointment as sessions have been cut and in some cases cancelled completely. I will carry on but where as I could donate 3 or 4 times a year I’m lucky now to do it once.
AndyAlcock96045 I agree, it's not easy to find a place to donate on a date/ time you'd like to. I'm donating for few years now and will carry on doing it for as long as they can use my blood. Glad to help anyone who'd need it
I think they should pay me £1 million per pint of unvaccinated O- blood that I donate or they can go f themselves.
Would love to but was told my iron levels were too low. I am and have always been just a bit anaemic (it doesn't affect my life). And the concern is that I would be at higher risk of illness or infection. Fair but in that case, what about when I had to have my blood drawn every other month while on medication? Did they think I was magically off risk for that whole year? Sorry for the rant, I just wish the rules were more flexible so I could give blood.
I have given blood for years as my blood group is O rhesus negative which can be used for transfusion to other blood groups. I had to stop when I started taking certain medications for life. I think it's a great thing and would encourage anyone to donate.
I gave blood for about 15 years but they struggled to find a vein and it was so slow, my very last time I gave the grumpy doctor told me never to come again as I'm taking his valuable time so I stopped going and reported him. My labrador also gave blood to help other dogs in need of a transfusion.
Unfortunately due to my own health issues I am unable to give blood. I did love the posters they have used before offering free tea and biscuits to get people in. Totally respect anyone who does it.
Yes I donated over 25 times. I was then diagnosed with a medical condition which meant they would no longer let me donate despite a letter from my consultant advising that there's no issue. To say the least I wasn't happy and therefore they will not be getting a donation from me thanks to their daft stance
I've only ever given blood once, I've never got around to going since. I spoke to a lady there, she'd given blood over 100 times.
I use to give blood and I was told mine was marked to be given to new born babies which was so lovely to hear. Unfortunately I had to stop following becoming anaemic, I now have to have iron infusions and I was told I need my blood. It was a nice thing to do at the time and was painless despite it taking a while for mine to come out compared to others but it was good to know you were doing a nice thing
Giving blood is one of those things I have always meant to do but never got around to. After reading this post I have finally registered to donate.
I was a blood donor for over a decade then on one visit while sitting and waiting for my turn ( l always cross my legs and my feet over eachother) my knee locked, on trying to uncross my legs l fell off the chair to the floor with my legs still crossed causing a meniscus tear..an ambulance had to be called as the pain was unbearable and l couldn't walk / stand. I was sent a letter a week later by the Give blood donating department saying l was being removed from the list and not being called to donate anymore. Why?? I will never know as no explanation was given, their loss not mine.
