Have You Ever Got Money off a Defected Item?
Money Saving
If I'm in a shop and I see a broken item or mouldy food, I often take it to the till or let a staff member know.
But I have been looking for some nice decent plant pots for a while, that didn't cost a fortune and I came across these at £4 each.
There were only 4 left on the shelf in Dunelm, but I really needed to repot my plants and I thought it didn't matter that one was quite discoloured as I was putting a plant in it so I'd barely see where it was mainly discoloured. But as I got to the till I also noticed it was also misshapen around the rim, so I had to decide if I really wanted it, I said 'No chance of a discount on it?'
And they reduced one by 20% so that made my decision for me
It always pays to ask, I mean I wouldn't in a normal big shop if I wanted to buy anything, I'm not saying to damage anything either for the purpose of trying to get a discount, as you are likely to get caught or have to pay for it anyway!
But if there is a defect you have every right to ask, what's the worst they can say... no?
Happy with my purchases today, now need to get replanting.

Our local superdrugs have a reduced price section. It's only small but sometimes you see broken tops of say a moisturizer or something similar and they drop the price a little for it.
I'm glad you got a discount they say if you don't ask you don't get! I will do this if opportunity arises
DeBunny - It doesn't work in various Asda or Tesco stores in my area. I have pointed flaws, etc on various items and both store's customer service refused to lower the prices regarding the item concerned.
jam45 Thanks for responding. I wouldn't normally have asked, but they didn't question it, they were happy to discount.
I'm sorry you didn't get a discount, I do think some staff aren't able to give it and would need to ask a manager and get the okay etc. In that case a saving of 80p might not have been worth the time, as if you had to wait half an hour depending on how you value your time (£9.50 is the minimum wage at the moment, so that would have been £4.75 worth of your time or you could have earned that 80p in online surveys if you had that spare time etc.)
I just didn't want people who might not otherwise ask not to say anything, the worse they can say if no or no I'm removing this from sale vs best case scenario you could get a discount or even a free item; My friend was buying fruit in Waitrose and the till person said they couldn't sell them as they were open, my friend didn't realise and said it may have been her when she put it in her trolley and asked what will happen to them now. They said they'd have to be thrown away, so my friend said she'd buy them then. So they said she could just have them. Saving around £4.50 and saving waste.
If an item was defective and I really wanted it I would ask for a discount, my best one was in Homebase when they had 2 grey 1 metre tall pots for the garden, both had a couple of marks on then so they half priced both for me , another on a pair of boots in Clarks, slight mark on boot so discounted by £5. Always worth asking.
Yes, I often ask and normally a manager approves it, with the condition that I bought it as a defective item so I can’t return it
Yes, I just moaned to amazon about some bashed up tomato tins, and they gave me a full refund, have to be careful, as apparently they have an algorithm which rejects to many complaints..
Zcaprd7 And so they should. I wouldn't purposely break something (I know people do)
Amazon are good for this, sometimes we've had one can in a big batch that has exploded and they refund the lot and let you keep them all. But I'd imagine plenty of people try this a lot and even say some things are missing when they aren't. Must take it's toll on some companies.
Yes, I only complain when it's really bad, I spend a lot with amazon, so I hope the algorithm recognises that, but yes, I can imagine a few people try it on!
pato I only need 3 plant pots right now, I got the spare in case I needed it. I've repotted them, it's only one little bit I'm sure it would be fine as a plant pot, but I might not even use it for a plant.
I got 20% off but they can't allow returns on it, as hspexy said above, this is because some people would try and return it for full price.
