Have You Ever Been to Wimbledon ?
Ask a Question
I was watching the queues for Wimbledon. I have only been to Wimbledon once, over forty years ago. It was on a school trip, when I was in my early teens. I remember it well for all the wrong reasons, it was raining and cold. We travelled by bus, all the way from South Wales, and I used to get travel sick.
When we finally arrived, it was a lesson in haves and have nots. Any seating under cover, we werent allowed in, despite them being empty as our tickets were for general admittance.
My mother had given me a either a fiver or a tenner, I remember thinking it was a lot of £, at the time, for strawberries and cream, only to discover it wasnt enough.
It was a miserable day, walking around all day trying to find somewhere out of the rain. No surprise rain stopped play, so we didnt even see any tennis. A long trip home and I caught a cold, so was ill for the next few days.
Never been to Wimbledon since.
Have you been and if so, did you have a better time ?
beccatavender - What an unpleasant experience of Wimbledon and the tennis class system. I have no interest into tennis whatsoever. I can't even name the winners - male and female of the past.
jam45 To be honest it turned me off Tennis, after that experience I don't even watch it on TV
I’ve never been. I like some tennis but I’m not into it enough to watch the whole thing. Some of my family have been a couple of times though a few years ago. They enjoyed it but had to queue a long time. Not something I would be prepared to do.
JLouM Watching the news, they interviewed someone who had been in the queue for nine hours and unbelievable she was still upbeat and looked at the queuing as part of the experience. A very positive attitude, but not one I would have been able to follow
My partner & our daughter went to Queens Tennis Tournament other weekend I stayed home looking after our 2 cats as I'm NOT a Tennis fan..I switched Tennis on just as the trophy was been given!!
janphoenix51 I know what you mean, I have no interest but know that there will be no getting away from if per the next couple of weeks
My partner also got Wimbledon tickets for him & our daughter but as she's on her Radiography placement she couldn't go ,he ended up giving the ticket to his sister in law...x
janphoenix51 I bet he was popular, if you are a fan and have seats and good weather it's supposed to be a great atmosphere. My experience just ruined tennis for me, prior to actually going I used to enjoy watching it on the telly.
I went to Wimbledon years ago on a school trip and loved the atmosphere. I remember trying to get some autographs. However, I don’t think I will ever go again and I begrudge the entry price. I think you see far more on tv.
Pjran I am glad your experience was so positive. I think the weather spoilt it for me, plus it was such a long journey to get there and then no tennis
My first fiance played tennis (40 years ago) and we would go shopping the night before for our picnic and strawberries & cream, pack up our cool box and leave at 4am from Battersea, join the queue at about 7am and we're always able to get tickets for any court, l have seen Pat Cash, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Ivan Lendl, Jimmy Connors and many more great names, always had great weather, spent the whole day there, putting our tickets in the box to be resold as we left. Fast forward to present day and I'm more of a football girl now (tv watching).
Pinkspirit That sounds amazing, I think why it was so disappointing was because I wanted to see those players, I must admit I used to think Björn Borg was dishy.
I have never been to Wimbledon to watch tennis, I have never watched it on tv as I have no interest. I used to play years ago, I prefer to play sports then watch others.
never been. im not much of a tennis fan so wouldnt be much point for me to be honest. tho i do like the thought of the strawberries and cream lol as expensive as they may be.
I went on a school trip about 45 years ago, I was in my teens and absolutely loved it. We had packed lunches and my Mum had made me salmon sandwiches and lovely treats . I know we didn't watch much tennis but a day out with my school mates was the bees knees and the weather was amazing.
I've not been to Wimbledon but I did once win free tickets for us to watch The Devonshire Park, Eastbourne tennis finals (mens, womens & doubles) and we had a brilliant day.
I had a holiday to the french open booked in 2020 but then Covid hit, always wanted to go to Wimbledon and plan to do the whole camping out and queuing thing but so glad I didn't do it this year after what I've read in the news.
I watch a bit of Wimbledon when at my mother's house who lives nearby. I quite enjoy it but not enough that I would want to go to Wimbledon itself with all the expense and travelling time. If somehow I got free tickets I would probably try to sell them rather than use them.
No, I hate tennis almost as much as I hate football, or do I hate football almost as much as I hate tennis.....dunno.
My partner & his friend went to watch the Women's Semi Finals & other matches yesterday, sat on the famous Henman Hill or Murray's Mount as some call it.
Originally partner had a spare ticket as our Student Radiographer daughter couldn't attend due to placement so he gave the ticket to his new sister in law as a birthday present but she couldn't go without her husband (Partner's brother) we found our a few week ago so looked like partner had wasted £80 ..
I mentioned it to our friend who said he might be interested, details were sorted late Tuesday night,my partner cancelled his train ticket from Sheffield to London as our friend was going to drive down to Newmarket then they would catch the train..Friend bought train tickets fror the Newmarket-London part of trip & they set off at 5.45am yesterday, loved the Tennis & Strawberries & Cream It was £.2.50 for 9 juicy Strawberries with Cream,a decent price for Wimbledon.
They left Wimbledon at 6.40pm & got back to Sheffield at 2.05am this morning due to road closures!!
They are sorting costs between today!
They really enjoyed the Wimbledon Experience, partner hopes to go with our Tennis mad daughter next year...Me ,I'm staying at home looking after our 2 cats,I find Tennis boring!
We went last year on spec, we were in London to see Grease and thought we'd chance our arm. It was the last Saturday and we got the train across town, walking up there were lots of people streaming away from Wimbledon so I checked my phone and the mens doubles final was still on, we went through and enquired at the resale box if there were any tickets. We got 2 tickets for the front row of the final for £15 each and watched the last few sets.
It was a great experience and would recommend if you're up that way to try it.
I have been a wombler for years so I love going down to Wimbledon and sometimes I do go to watch the tennis.
I've never been to Wimbledon and have no desire to go either. I am not that interested in tennis and it is very expensive.
Not somewhere I’d really want to go to, idea of 2 people batting a ball back and forwards over a net seems to me as senseless as 22 men running round a field all over 1 ball. I’m just not a sporty person or interested in watching it either
