Fashion Waste

In the News

Here in the middle of the Atacama desert in Chile lay piles and piles of dumped clothes. Clothes not even wanted by charity shops. Every year 39,000 tons of fast fashion waste are dumped here .The UK is rumoured to discard 13 million items of clothing every week. Many fast fashion items are made from non bio degradable materials so cannot be recycled either. So come on folks lets think about our wardrobe a little bit more eh? Image

M, I watched dragons den the other night and someone had formed a company to swap childrens clothes when they outgrew them , very well organised

This is the type of schemes needed to do away with clothes waste

I believe some manufacturers are also looking into this before governments make compulsory rules

i saw that too, it seems like a great idea although i thought it was kind of one thats already done between groups anyway without the cost, there's facebook pages where you can get loads of especially baby cloths from. it is a shame to see clothes go to waste so quickly.

I'm really shocked a this story as I thought that the majority of old clothing was given a new lease of life. I came across this website

Yes I kinda knew but this brought it home with a greater impact. Serious visuals usually press a point.

It is shocking how much is wasted people just chuck stuff nowadays if kids were learnt how to repair stuff at school it could help I learnt to sew in primary school and how to repair electrical items in secondary school I think these skills should be learnt at every school

Mick82 A woman on Facebook admitted that when her toaster gets dirty she just chucks it and buys a new one! She was obviously vilified by everyone in the group. This planet is doomed when people like this exist.

I repair clothes when I can and I only ever buy something when I actually need it. I sell my son's clothes on when he has outgrown them and I buy the majority of his clothes 2nd hand.

MelissaLee1963 thanks. I sell on or give away for free everything that our son has grown out of including toys, buggies, books. My husband and I only buy clothes when we need to replace something. I've fixed 2 of his shirts and a pair of work trousers so he didn't need to buy new ones.

I try and reuse as much as I can. I'm part of a swap shop were we recycle and reuse both toys and clothes, keeping things away from land fill. Also do this with school uniforms too .

I think if I live another 40 years I probably do not need to by anymore clothes. My wardrobe is full from my younger days, wish I could get my daughter to understand she does not need to follow fashion. I guess most of us get sucked in a some point in our lives.

I think we need to inform/ educate people on the issue. We always try to pass on items, sell them or (pre pandemic, sent them to charity shops). Clothes that can't be passed on we use as rags ect for cleaning, but we were brought up not to waste anything.
